Elversberg stuns Bundesliga with 4-3 win over Mönchengladbach despite playing without its coach

A town of barely 13,000 people has the entire Bundesliga talking. Elversberg, playing its first season in Germany's top flight, pulled off another shocker on Saturday, beating Borussia Mönchengladbach 4-3 with a stoppage-time goal. What made it even more remarkable: the club did it without its coach on the sideline.

Vincent Wagner was sent off before halftime and had to watch the rest of the match from the stands or the tunnel. Even so, his team never cracked. Quite the opposite: Elversberg dug in, and in the dying seconds Maurice Krattenmacher popped up with the winner that sent the home crowd into a frenzy. Last week's victim had been Bayer Leverkusen; this time it was Gladbach's turn. Two former German champions brought to their knees by a newly promoted side. Wagner will pay a price for his red card, though: he'll miss the next match, a visit from league leader and defending champion Bayern Munich.

The rest of the German matchday also shook things up among the title contenders. Borussia Dortmund fell two goals behind against Hoffenheim but came back to win 3-2, thanks to an own goal from defender Albian Hajdari in the 86th minute that completed the comeback. Meanwhile, Leipzig, usually among the top challengers, came away empty-handed on the road against Werder Bremen, who thrashed them 3-1 with a goal from new signing Niclas Füllkrug among the scorers. And in Leverkusen, new coach Carles Martínez picked up his first league win in charge with a resounding 4-0 victory over Union Berlin.

Athletic routs an unrecognizable Atlético

In Spain, Athletic Bilbao didn't need to make things complicated. An even first half gave way to a second in which the Basque side brought out its full arsenal and ended up routing Diego Simeone's Atlético Madrid 3-0. The goals came from Nico Williams, Robert Navarro and Oihan Sancet, all scored after the break with the game already underway.

It was Athletic's second straight win since Edin Terzić took charge of the bench, a run that is starting to show signs of identity under the new German coach.

Haaland and City keep rolling

In England, nobody can stop Manchester City. Erling Haaland scored again, this time in a 1-0 win over Coventry, his third goal of the season so far, leaving Pep Guardiola's side unbeaten atop the table with nine points from a possible nine after three matchdays.

Further down the table, Tottenham breathed a sigh of relief with their first point of the season in a 0-0 draw against Nottingham Forest, while Newcastle, now under Matthias Jaissle, remain unbeaten thanks to a late goal from Jacob Ramsey that sealed a 2-2 draw with Bournemouth. Crystal Palace, for their part, had to come from behind twice at Craven Cottage to claim a 3-2 win over Fulham and pick up their first points of the season, on a matchday that also saw draws between Brighton and Leeds (1-1), and between Brentford and Sunderland (1-1).
