Erik Lira returns to Cruz Azul after Monaco deal falls through
The captain came off the bench in Matchday 7 against Santos, a week after vanishing from the squad list during negotiations with the French club.

Twenty minutes before warmups, Erik Lira was already out on the field at Estadio Banorte, waving to fans who cheered him as if nothing had happened. In truth, plenty had happened: just five days earlier, a move to Monaco had collapsed, and a week before that he wasn't even training with the rest of the squad. This Sunday, against Santos, he pulled on the Cruz Azul jersey again.
The midfielder had dropped out of the matchday squad for the games against Atlas and Necaxa, right as negotiations with the French club were heating up. Everything pointed to him packing his bags. But the European market closed and the deal never got done, so Lira had to report back to La Noria on Friday, with almost no group training under his belt, and wait his turn.
Joel Huiqui decided to include him among the call-ups for Matchday 7 of the Apertura 2026, though he kept him on the bench to start. That made sense: it's not easy to throw a player straight into the lineup after days off the coaching staff's radar, captain or not.
A comeback with the armband
Lira was among the first to step onto the grass, spending a good while near Jeremy Marquez and Luka Romero before official warmups, then running through plays with the group of substitutes, which also included Alan Mozo, one of La Maquina's new signings and a former teammate of his at Pumas. He got his No. 6 jersey back and sat down to wait.
The wait ended in the 78th minute. He was the first to warm up, checked in with the coach several times looking for instructions, and when the substitution finally came, the fans greeted him with an ovation. Carlos Rodriguez walked over and handed him the captain's armband, which Lira put on while already barking out instructions to his teammates. A quiet statement that whatever happens with his future, he remains the team's captain.
He played 18 minutes between the end of regulation and six minutes of stoppage time. He got involved, celebrated Jose Paradela's goal, and celebrated the final whistle too. Not bad for someone who had gone nearly a week without touching a ball with the first team. In fact, his last appearance before this whole episode had come on August 16 against Tijuana, so the layoff was a long one.
After the final whistle, he stayed on the field doing physical work with the rest of the substitutes, trying to get back the rhythm he lost during the failed negotiation. Cruz Azul now turns its attention to the next match, the clasico against America, on Saturday at the same Estadio Banorte, with the question hanging over whether Lira will be ready to reclaim a starting spot or whether his reintegration will remain a gradual process.
