Slovakia Blitzes Moldova With Two Goals in Eight Minutes
A headed goal from Schranz and a converted penalty by Duda gave Slovakia the win in the Nations League group C3 opener, in a match dominated from start to finish.

It took Slovakia just eight minutes to settle the match. Between the 31st and 39th minutes at Futbal Tatran Arena, the home side turned a scoreless deadlock into a 2-0 lead that left Moldova with no way back in the group C3 opener for both teams in the UEFA Nations League.
The first goal came from a corner kick: Tomás Suslov whipped in a cross and Ivan Schranz rose in the middle of the box to head home the opener in the 31st minute. Barely eight minutes later, Iurie Iovu brought down Lukás Haraslín inside the area for a penalty, and Ondrej Duda made no mistake from the spot to make it 2-0 in the 39th minute. That was the score at halftime, and nothing would change on the scoreboard in the second half.
Total control from start to finish
Slovakia's performance wasn't just about finishing in the opponent's box, it was about controlling the ball from start to finish. The home side finished with 67.4% possession and 710 completed passes, compared to just 334 for Moldova. Slovakia also had the edge in attacking output, firing 17 shots to Moldova's 8, though the accuracy wasn't quite there: only 3 of those shots found the target, compared to 1 for Moldova.
Before the goals, there were warning signs on both ends. Victor Stîna and Petru Popescu had early chances for Moldova, and Dávid Hancko came close to scoring on several set-piece plays for Slovakia. In the second half, with the result well in hand, Tomás Suslov rattled the left post with a shot in the 56th minute, and both Lukás Haraslín and Ondrej Duda had clear chances that didn't result in goals. Moldova, for its part, looked for answers with substitutes Vladimir Fratea and Cristian Dros, who tried their luck from outside the box without success.
| Statistic | Slovakia | Moldova |
|---|---|---|
| Possession (%) | 67.4 | 32.6 |
| Shots | 17 | 8 |
| Shots on target | 3 | 1 |
| Corners | 7 | 3 |
| Passes | 710 | 334 |
| Fouls committed | 8 | 12 |
The expected goals numbers, calculated after the fact based on shot location, back up what played out on the field: Slovakia generated an xG of 1.68 against Moldova's 0.65, a gap that confirms the home side's dominance went beyond mere possession and extended to the quality of scoring chances too.
What it means for the standings
With this result, Slovakia opened group C3 at the top of the table with 3 points, the product of a win in its first match and a goal difference of +2. Moldova, meanwhile, sits pointless after the loss, with a goal difference of -2. There's already a 3-point gap between the two sides in the group standings, though it's worth remembering this is only the first match for all four teams, so there's still plenty of the tournament left to play.
For Slovakia, the match was a picture of solidity: control of the ball, sharpness on set pieces, and a defense that, according to the match statistics, allowed the opponent just one clear scoring chance all game. For Moldova, on the other hand, the opener serves as a reminder of what needs fixing: the lack of possession and the missing accuracy on shots on target outweighed the effort shown, especially in the closing stretch when the team pushed with attacking substitutions but couldn't find a way to get on the scoreboard.
