Espanyol Lands One Blow to Sink a Dominant Villarreal at the Ceramica
A lone goal from Leandro Cabrera was enough for Espanyol to win a match in which Villarreal controlled the ball and the shots but couldn't find the net.

Villarreal spent the entire match pushing forward, but Espanyol left the Ceramica with all three points thanks to a single blow. Leandro Cabrera finished with his left foot from the center of the box in the 59th minute to make it 0-1, a final scoreline that leaves the yellow submarine with the feeling that controlling the ball for nearly the whole match simply wasn't enough.
The first half was a scrappy affair, full of fouls and short on clear chances. Villarreal generated some danger down the flank through Santiago Mourino and Nicolas Pepe, who came on early after Gerard Moreno went off injured in the 17th minute, but without seriously troubling Espanyol. Espanyol, for its part, defended well and looked to hit on the counter through Bryan Zaragoza.
The opening stretch of the second half was the most intense part of the match, though not because of the scoreline. Right after the restart, in the 47th minute, Roberto Fernandez put the ball in the net for Espanyol, but VAR stepped in and the goal was disallowed. Two minutes later, in the 49th minute, the decision was made official: it wouldn't count. Villarreal breathed a sigh of relief, but not for long.
Barely ten minutes later, Espanyol found the reward it had been chasing all afternoon. In the 59th minute, after a free kick was played short, Bryan Zaragoza whipped in a cross and Leandro Cabrera arrived to finish left-footed into the top corner. That goal, the only one of the match, proved enough for Espanyol to walk away with all three points from the Estadio de la Ceramica.
Dominance That Didn't Translate Into Goals
The numbers tell the story of the match clearly: Villarreal was far superior in terms of ball control and shot volume, but lacked the finishing touch, or perhaps a bit of luck, in the opposing box.
| Stat | Villarreal | Espanyol |
|---|---|---|
| Possession (%) | 62.8 | 37.2 |
| Shots | 14 | 5 |
| Shots on target | 4 | 3 |
| Corners | 7 | 3 |
| Passes | 564 | 326 |
| Fouls committed | 15 | 13 |
In our own expected goals estimate, calculated from the location of the match's shots, Villarreal generated 0.758 xG compared to Espanyol's 0.556. Those are tight numbers that point to an evenly matched contest in terms of chance quality, far from reflecting such a wide gap in possession or total shots.
The outcome also stands in sharp contrast to our pre-match projections: our model gave Villarreal a 61% chance of winning, against 23% for a draw and just 16% for Espanyol, with expected goals of 2.03 for the home side and 0.97 for the visitors. None of that held up. The favorite failed to score, and the team given the longest odds on paper walked away with the full three points.
Carlos Macia, Sergi Cardona and Santi Comesana were booked for the home side, while Rafel Bauza, Roger Hinojo and Bryan Zaragoza picked up yellow cards for Espanyol, in a physical match (15 fouls from Villarreal to 13 from Espanyol) that nonetheless stayed free of any major disciplinary incidents.
What It Means in the Standings
In the LaLiga table, the result leaves both teams very close to each other: Villarreal stays in 10th place with 12 points after 11 matches played (3 wins, 3 draws and 5 losses), while Espanyol sits in 12th with 11 points from the same number of matches (3 wins, 2 draws and 6 losses). The gap between the two is just 1 point, a clear sign of how tightly packed this part of the table is right now.
For Villarreal, it's a case of a missed opportunity: the team dominated, fired off fourteen shots and watched VAR rule out a goal, though in this case it was Espanyol's goal that got disallowed, yet still couldn't find a way through. For Espanyol, on the other hand, this is a win that means a great deal: the team had less of the ball and fewer shots, but landed the right blow at exactly the right moment.
