Estudiantes dominate but can't crack Newell's defense in scoreless 0-0

Carrillo had the goal in the 41st minute but it crashed off the crossbar, in a match where Estudiantes fired 24 shots but the visiting goalkeeper proved decisive.

Estudiantes dominate but can't crack Newell's defense in scoreless 0-0

The crossbar (Newell's crossbar, to be precise) denied Guido Carrillo a goal in the 41st minute, and that image sums up the afternoon at the Jorge Luis Hirschi pretty well: Estudiantes de La Plata spent all 90 minutes pushing, shooting and searching, but the score finished 0-0 against Newell's Old Boys in Argentina's Primera Division.

The home side came out with clear intentions to control the game. Before the 30-minute mark they had already created several chances: a shot from Baltasar Rodriguez in the 21st minute that was saved, another from Joaquin Correa in the 22nd that forced a great stop into the top corner, and a header from Gabriel Neves that also ran into the visiting goalkeeper. Newell's, meanwhile, barely showed up, with Matias Coccaro trying his luck from distance without finding the target.

The clearest chance of the first half came in the 41st minute: Carrillo connected with a header from point-blank range off a cross from Eros Mancuso, and the ball crashed off the crossbar. Two minutes later, Walter Mazzantti answered for Newell's with a header that flew just wide of the right post, the visitors' best look of the entire opening half. The teams went into the break scoreless despite Estudiantes' relentless pressure.

The second half, more of the same

Estudiantes de La Plata shook up the bench at the start of the second half, bringing on Eric Meza and Alexis Castro, and kept the initiative. Castro had a shot blocked in the 53rd minute, Joaquin Tobio Burgos tried three separate times between the 61st and 70th minutes without luck, and Santiago Nunez also had a go from outside the box. Newell's answered with isolated flashes: a shot from Coccaro in the 55th minute, another from Thomas Rios that flew well over in the 58th, and a chance for Mazzantti that was controlled right under the crossbar in the 65th.

In the closing stretch, with Brian Aguirre and Edwuin Cetre already on the field for the home side, Estudiantes kept pressing: Eric Meza clipped the crossbar in the 84th minute, and deep into stoppage time, with five minutes added on, there were shots from Aguirre and a header from Gonzalez Pirez that found no way through. Newell's goalkeeper, who ended up being the standout performer for the visitors, held the draw to the final whistle.

The numbers explain the siege

The stats make the gap in control clear, though not in finishing:

With 24 shots to 9, and a total of nine attempts on frame, the home side built more than enough to have won the match. In fact, our estimate of xG generated in the match (an in-house calculation done after the fact based on shot locations, not a prediction) gives Estudiantes 2.85 against just 1.27 for Newell's, a gap that reflects the imbalance in chances even though the scoreline didn't show it.

The preview we published ahead of the match projected a 62% chance of an Estudiantes win, a 25% chance of a draw and just 13% for Newell's, with a total expected goals figure of 2.5. The final result ended up being exactly the least likely of the three outcomes, with a scoreless scoreline that didn't even fit within that goals projection.

In the Group A standings, this draw leaves Newell's in fifth place with 11 points and Estudiantes de La Plata in 12th with 7, four points apart. For the home side, who have now posted two wins, one draw and four losses in the competition, splitting the points feels like a missed opportunity after such dominance. For Newell's, on the other hand, the point taken from La Plata carries a different flavor: holding firm against the run of play under so much pressure counts as an achievement of its own.
