Fenerbahce holds off Lyon rally to reach Champions League league phase
The Turkish side closed out the tie 3-2 on aggregate after winning 2-1 on the road in the playoff round second leg.
Some nights, holding a lead takes more out of you than building it did. This was one of them. Fenerbahce weathered a Lyon side that threw everything forward in the second half and closed out a 2-1 scoreline in the second leg that, combined with the 1-1 draw from the first leg, was enough to seal the tie 3-2 on aggregate and send the Turkish club into the league phase of the 2026-27 Champions League.
The Turkish side wasted no time. Playing away from home, Fenerbahce went straight for the game from the opening whistle and broke through in the 24th minute: Vedat Muriqi pounced on a rebound inside the box and made no mistake, making it 1-0. The lead grew even more commanding four minutes later, when a cross was met with a header from goalkeeper Greif could do nothing about. At 2-0, Fenerbahce went into the break with the tie all but sealed.
Lyon, needing something extraordinary to flip the tie, came out for the second half with a different energy. The breakthrough arrived in the 61st minute: Malick Fofana latched onto a pinpoint pass from Ainsley Maitland-Niles and finished first-time into the far corner to cut the deficit. The goal gave the French side new life, and they pushed forward in search of the equalizer that would have swung the tie back in their favor.
There were a couple of scares for the Turks along the way. In the 64th minute, Lois Openda headed home an assist from Abner Vinicius, but the goal was ruled out for offside. Seven minutes later, Kain Boudache pounced on another rebound and put the ball in the net again, only for VAR review to flag offside once more. Lyon had the equalizer wiped off the board twice, and that wound up being the difference between staying alive and going home.
Nicolas Tagliafico came on late looking to add something different off the bench, but there was no time or room left to change the story. Fenerbahce held on through the closing minutes and celebrated a result that returns the club to the league phase of European club soccer's biggest competition.
With this result, the 36 clubs set to take part in the 2026-27 Champions League league phase are now confirmed, following the conclusion of the final playoff round. The draw that will set the schedule and matchups for each club will take place this Thursday in Monaco, and Fenerbahce already knows it will be among the contenders in this new edition of the tournament.
