It took Ferran Torres just seventy one minutes to make himself at home. He came off the bench, touched the ball twice with precision, and handed PSG an equalizer that had looked out of reach half an hour earlier. The Valencia-born forward, who joined from Barcelona after scoring the goal that won Spain the World Cup title last month, came off the bench at Rennes and struck twice, in the 71st and 82nd minutes, to seal a 2-2 draw on the opening day of Ligue 1. Both assists came from fellow Spaniard Fabián Ruiz, who is quickly becoming the team's go-to playmaker.

Defending champion PSG had fallen behind by two goals, with Sebastian Szymanski and Esteban Lepaul putting Rennes ahead in the first half. The comeback spared the Parisians a second straight defeat to open the season, after they had lost on penalties to Lens in the French Super Cup final.

On the same day, Olivier Giroud, who turns 40 next month, scored from about 20 yards to give Lille a 2-0 win at Angers. Midfielder Ayyoub Bouaddi was left out of Lille's squad amid rumors of a big-money transfer to Manchester City.

Maresca Wins His First Premier League Duel

In England, Enzo Maresca had what he called a perfect day. Manchester City came from behind in the final ten minutes to beat Bournemouth 2-1, handing the Italian his first win as Pep Guardiola's successor.

Defending champion Liverpool salvaged a 2-2 draw at Newcastle thanks to a Dominik Szoboszlai penalty converted in the ninth minute of stoppage time. Brighton, meanwhile, put on an offensive show, scoring four goals in the first 31 minutes to rout Aston Villa 4-0.

Salah Opens His Account in Turkey

Mohamed Salah also had his own big day in new colors. The Egyptian scored twice, in the 8th and 48th minutes, as Trabzonspor beat Başakşehir 2-1. Salah signed a two-year deal with the Turkish club following his long and successful spell at Liverpool.

In the Netherlands, Feyenoord's match at Cambuur, which ended 5-2 in the Rotterdam side's favor, had to be halted after traveling fans set off fireworks that reportedly caused minor injuries to some supporters. The Dutch football federation condemned the incident.

Julián Álvarez Booed at the Metropolitano
