Galoppo set for Atlanta United, closing another chapter of River's container group

The midfielder has an outstanding debt to settle before he can sign his 10 month loan deal with an option to buy.

The makeshift locker room inside a shipping container at the Ensenada de Barragán training complex has already become too small to hold this story. What matters now is the exit door: River continues working to close out this uncomfortable chapter, and the next player set to leave has a name: Giuliano Galoppo.

With Leonardo Ponzio now in interim charge and following the win over Banfield, River's leadership has come to understand that restoring institutional order also means addressing the roster. Winning games and fighting for a spot in international competitions is not enough. The club needs to recover an identity that got lost across two coaching cycles without a clear direction. Part of that rebuilding process means moving on from the players left on the outside, training separately in that makeshift space fans have taken to calling the "container group."

Since the start of 2026, River has already parted ways with 15 players, eleven of whom belonged specifically to that sidelined group. It has run the gamut: contract terminations, cut-short loans, straightforward departures. World Cup winner Germán Pezzella was the latest to leave, heading to Peñarol, while Ecuadorian Kendry Páez ended his loan early and returned to Chelsea, who hold his rights.

Galoppo, bags packed for MLS

The midfielder, who came through Banfield's academy, arrived at River on loan in 2025 carrying high expectations that never translated into results on the field. He now has a formal offer from Atlanta United, and the clubs have already reached an agreement: a loan for 10 months with an option to buy. The only remaining hurdle is personal. Galoppo has an outstanding debt with his former agent, a claim in the neighborhood of $500,000, and he needs to resolve it before he can sign. If everything falls into place, he will share an MLS locker room with another former River man, defender Paulo Díaz, who also spent time in the container before moving on.

Galoppo's numbers at Núñez make clear why this chapter is closing: he played 48 matches since January 2025 (14 of them in 2026), scored eight goals and added just one assist. Figures that promised more than they ultimately delivered on the field.

Still waiting for a way out

Not everyone shares the same fortune. Fabricio Bustos, signed for roughly $5 million, has drawn interest from Rosario Central and a club in Mexican soccer, but nothing has moved forward yet. In 53 matches wearing River's jersey he has not scored a single goal and has only two assists to his name.

The case of Matías Galarza Fonda is different. After standing out with Paraguay's national team at the World Cup, he drew interest from several clubs abroad, but no offer ever came through. He seemed on track to join Olimpia in Paraguay, but that chance also fell apart in the last few hours. This week he did not even show up to train at the Ensenada de Barragán facility. He played 14 matches in the second half of 2025, without a goal or an assist, and did not even go through preseason with the first team.

The toughest case to sort out is Matías Viña, because in this instance River does not even hold the decision-making power: his rights belong to Flamengo, and the loan runs through December with a mandatory purchase clause of $4.5 million if the fullback played in 50% of matches, which did not happen. In his 14 appearances since January he contributed no goals and no assists.

Ponzio and the club's leadership face a двойной challenge: trim the list of players with no place in the project while, at the same time, finding a version of River that fans can recognize again on the field. Clearing out what remains of the container looks like the mandatory first step.
