Guatemala learns its Nations League path, with two home games at El Trébol

The dates and opponents are now on the table. Guatemala's national team learned its official schedule for the Concacaf Nations League this Friday, the tournament that in the coming September and October will settle much of La Bicolor's path toward the 2027 Gold Cup, set to be played between June and July of that year in the United States.

The concrete detail: La Bicolor will play two home games at Estadio Manuel Felipe Carrera, known as "El Trébol," and two more on the road, against Jamaica and Suriname. Not bad for a first look at the terrain before the action gets underway.

Guatemala, coached by Luis Fernando Tena, landed in Group B alongside Honduras, Jamaica, Suriname, Martinique and El Salvador. One thing to note about the format: it's a Swiss system, so not every team faces every other team in the traditional way, but in the end what matters is the standings. La Bicolor will play four matches in total, and only the top two finishers in the group advance to the Quarterfinals.

So what happens from there? The teams that already had their tickets punched earlier join the mix at that stage: Mexico, the United States, Canada and Panama. It's a round where there's no room for error.

The road to the Gold Cup

Concacaf confirmed this Monday how the 16 spots for the 2027 Gold Cup will be distributed. Eight national teams will qualify directly through this fifth edition of the Nations League, another seven will come through the Preliminary Round (the so-called Prelims), and there will be a special guest rounding out the field: Saudi Arabia, which returns after taking part in 2025.

To understand the path clearly: the Quarterfinals will be decided over two legs, home and away. Whoever wins the aggregate score in each series earns a direct spot in the Gold Cup. The four teams that lose aren't eliminated outright, but instead drop down to fight for a place through the Preliminary Round.

Also joining that Preliminary Round will be the teams that finish third and fourth in their League A groups, while those that end up in fifth and sixth place still have one more door open: the Play-In between Leagues A and C.

According to the Concacaf schedule, that Preliminary Round will be played in March 2027 and will bring together 14 national teams competing for the seven remaining spots. That field will include the eight League A teams (the four that fell in the Quarterfinals plus the group's third and fourth-place finishers), the two best second-place teams from League B, and the four Play-In winners. Everything will again be decided over two-legged series: whoever wins on aggregate moves on.

For Guatemala, the message is clear: the margin for error in September and October will be minimal. Finishing among the top two in Group B doesn't guarantee anything on its own, but it does open the shortest door toward the ultimate goal. The other option, the Preliminary Round, remains alive, but it means a longer, more grueling path.
