Hamburg rallies with ten men, stuns Hoffenheim 2-3 in stoppage time
Down to ten men from the 64th minute, Hamburger SV turned the game around in the final minutes to beat TSG Hoffenheim 2-3 in the Bundesliga.

Hamburger SV left the SNP Arena with a 2-3 win that wasn't sealed until the 93rd minute, closing out this round of the Bundesliga. TSG Hoffenheim had come back to take the lead and spent nearly half an hour with an extra man on the field, yet still ended up conceding the decisive blow right when a draw looked like it would be enough.
The home side, on top of that, played with ten men from the 64th minute on, after Bernardo picked up a second yellow card for a dangerous challenge. And even so, Hoffenheim managed to lead for a good stretch of the second half. That's the strange part of this match: going down to ten men didn't decide the outcome right away. It took much longer than that.
A first half full of overturned goals
Hamburger SV struck early, in the 11th minute, when Yussuf Poulsen finished with his left foot from close range after a free kick was played short. Hoffenheim pushed back hard but without luck, and just before halftime thought it had equalized through a goal from Bambasé Conté that the VAR disallowed. The review confirmed the call two minutes later, already into the second half: no goal.
The equalizer came soon after, though not in the way the home side would have wanted: in the 50th minute, an own goal by Sebastiaan Bornauw made it 1-1. Two minutes later, Conté himself did find the net, curling a left-footed shot from outside the box after an assist from Fisnik Asllani, putting Hoffenheim up 2-1.
That's when the other turning point arrived: Bernardo's sending off for a second yellow card, in the 64th minute. Down a man, Hoffenheim held out longer than expected. It even got another VAR review in its favor when, in the 79th minute, a goal by Otto Stange was ruled out for a handball by Stange himself in the buildup. It looked like the scoreline would hold.
It didn't. Terem Moffi, who had come on off the bench, headed in the equalizer in the 82nd minute off a cross from Miro Muheim. And Muheim himself, with his left foot off a corner kick, made it a final 2-3 in the 93rd minute, deep into stoppage time.
What the numbers say
Hoffenheim controlled possession and generated more overall volume, but Hamburger SV made the most of the little it had.
| Stat | TSG Hoffenheim | Hamburger SV |
|---|---|---|
| Possession (%) | 64.2 | 35.8 |
| Shots | 17 | 15 |
| Shots on target | 4 | 4 |
| Corners | 7 | 3 |
| Passes | 544 | 305 |
| Fouls committed | 11 | 15 |
According to our expected goals estimate, calculated from the shots taken in the match, Hamburger SV generated 1.988 compared to Hoffenheim's 1.188, a gap that reflects what happened on the scoreboard better than the possession numbers do.
The result also runs counter to our pre-match projections, which gave Hoffenheim a 52% chance of winning against just 24% for Hamburger SV, with a draw also at 24%. Our pre-match expected goals had the home side ahead too, 2.06 to the visitors' 1.38. None of that held up: the team with the longer odds on paper walked away with all three points, coming back twice, the second time with a man down.
What it means in the standings
Hoffenheim, who arrived with a record of one win, no draws and four losses this season, stay in 17th place with 3 points. Hamburger SV, with two wins and three losses before this match, add another positive result and sit in the lower middle of the table, in 11th place, 3 points above today's opponent. For Hoffenheim, the frustration cuts twice as deep: they had the game in hand with a man advantage on the scoreboard and let it slip away in stoppage time.
