Independiente hosts a Boca side unbeaten in 12 games, with qualification on the line
The "Rojo" needs a win to stay alive in the race for the round of 16, while Boca arrives off a rout of Vasco Da Gama that sent it through to the Sudamericana final.
Some matchups need no introduction, and this is one of them. Independiente and Boca face off on Sunday, October 25 at the Estadio Libertadores de America - Ricardo Enrique Bochini, in Matchday 14 of Zone A of the 2026 Torneo Clausura, and the clash arrives loaded with urgency for one side and good form for the other.
Kickoff is set for 5:00 p.m. in Argentina, Chile and Uruguay, and 3:00 p.m. in Colombia, Peru and Ecuador. Fans in Argentina can catch it live on ESPN Premium, while the broadcast throughout the rest of Latin America runs on Disney+.
A classic with plenty at stake
For the "Rojo," this is anything but just another game: a win is essential to stay in the hunt for a spot in the local tournament's round of 16. Boca, on the other hand, arrives with far less pressure. The "Xeneize" recently booked its place in the Copa Sudamericana final and, at the same time, remains in close contention for the Annual Table.
On Independiente's side, keep an eye on Santiago Montiel, Maximiliano Meza, Juan Miguel Arrayago and Mateo Perez Curci, the core group that has carried the team through its recent run. For Boca, the names to watch are Lautaro Blanco, Leonel Flores, Santiago Ascacibar and Miguel Merentiel.
How both teams arrive
Independiente hasn't fared too badly of late: just one loss in its last six matches and a 1-1 draw at Racing in the most recent clasico. Even so, Jadson Viera's side knows that anything short of a win could knock it out of continental qualification contention and complicate its push to finish among the top eight in its zone, something it hasn't managed at home in five straight matches.
Boca, meanwhile, is riding high. The club just thrashed Vasco Da Gama 3-1 on the road to seal its spot in the Copa Sudamericana final, and domestically it has gone 12 matches unbeaten, following a 2-1 win over Talleres at home. On top of that, Rodolfo Arruabarrena's squad is in the fight for the Annual Table title and still has a Copa Argentina semifinal against Banfield ahead of it.
The most recent meeting between the two sides remains fresh in fans' minds: it came on April 11 of this same year, at La Bombonera, ending 1-1 with goals from Milton Gimenez for Boca and Matias Abaldo for Independiente.
With that recent history still lingering and the two clubs' storylines crossing paths once again in Avellaneda, one simple question hangs in the air: can Independiente finally snap its home losing skid against the very team playing the best soccer in the league right now?
