Racing lets the lead slip, draws 1-1 with Independiente at the Cilindro
Zaracho's goal put Racing ahead, but a penalty converted by Meza earned Independiente a draw in an even match.

Racing Club had the match under control thanks to a goal from Matías Zaracho, but let it slip away at the Cilindro de Avellaneda: the derby against Independiente finished 1-1, with a penalty that flipped the result in the second half. It was an even game, decided by two specific plays, and one that left more impressions than certainties in the standings.
The first half went back and forth, with Racing slightly more incisive. The opener came in the 28th minute: after a header from Adrián Martínez that the Independiente goalkeeper managed to parry, Zaracho pounced to tap it in from close range with his right foot, just inside the left post. It was 1-0, a fair advantage for the home side, which had already given warning earlier with shots from Gastón Lodico and from Matías Kranevitter himself from outside the box. Independiente answered with two headers from Chimy Ávila that went close, but couldn't do enough to unsettle Racing and went into the break down on the scoreboard.
In the second half, Independiente came out with a different attitude. Santiago Montiel tried twice from distance and Maximiliano Meza also had a go, until the key moment arrived in the 61st minute: Gonzalo Escudero committed a penalty inside the box on Meza himself, picking up a yellow card as an added punishment for the Racing defender. Three minutes later, Meza made no mistake from the spot, firing low with his right foot just inside the left post to make it a final 1-1.
Racing had chances to respond afterward. Ulises Ortegoza, on from the bench, forced a good save with a low shot from inside the box, and Mateo Pérez Curci, on Independiente's side, grazed the crossbar on a counterattack. Neither side found the second goal despite the changes made by both coaches, Sebastián Romero for Racing and Jádson Viera for Independiente, looking for answers in the final twenty minutes.
What the numbers say
The match was even across nearly every metric, something the final score ended up reflecting fairly.
| Stat | Racing Club | Independiente |
|---|---|---|
| Possession (%) | 53 | 47 |
| Shots | 9 | 10 |
| Shots on target | 3 | 3 |
| Corners | 8 | 4 |
| Passes | 404 | 372 |
| Fouls committed | 16 | 9 |
According to our own estimate based on the shots taken in the match, Racing generated 1.393 expected goals compared to 1.16 for Independiente, a minimal gap that confirms just how tight the contest was. Beforehand, we had projected a 43% chance of a Racing win, a 30% chance of a draw and 27% for Independiente, with total expected goals of 2.49. The draw, which was the least likely of the three outcomes, ended up being the final result.
What it means for the standings
The draw doesn't change much for Independiente, who came into the match in seventh place in Group A with 19 points, the product of five wins, four draws and four losses so far in the tournament, with a negative goal difference. Racing, meanwhile, does not appear in the standings tracked by this report, so there's no way to put its current position into context. At the very top sits Instituto, with 29 points after nine wins, two draws and two losses, a good distance from the battle these two rivals fought out today.
In the end, a match that had a bit of everything, a well-built goal, a penalty that changed the story, and chances for both sides, ended up splitting the points at the Cilindro. Racing couldn't hold onto its lead, and Independiente couldn't fully overturn what the home side had done well in the first half.
