Inter blitz Monza 4-1 at the Meazza with a second-half rout
The home side dominated with 70.5% possession and pulled away in the second half after a brief first-half equalizer.
Internazionale routed Monza 4-1 at the Stadio Giuseppe Meazza in a match that looked like it might get complicated midway through the first half, but ended up settled by an overwhelming second-half showing from the home side in this Serie A clash.
The Milan side got off to the best possible start: just five minutes in, Hakan Calhanoglu curled a right-footed finish from outside the box after a pass from Andy Diouf to make it 1-0. Monza refused to fold, though, and drew level in the 28th minute through Gustavo Varela, who struck a right-footed shot from inside the area into the left side of the net after a pass from Mathis Mout. At 1-1, the first half wrapped up with Inter controlling the ball but unable to turn that dominance into goals.
The second half: a home-team showcase
The second half told a completely different story. Just two minutes after the restart, in the 47th minute, Piotr Zielinski made it 2-1 with a right-footed finish into the middle of the goal off a corner kick. The knockout blow came quickly: in the 54th minute, Francesco Pio Esposito tapped in from point-blank range off a Diouf assist to make it 3-1, and eight minutes later, in the 62nd, Yann Bisseck curled a left-footed shot into the top corner after a cross from Esposito himself to seal the final 4-1. In just 15 minutes, Inter blew past any resistance from the visitors and had the match wrapped up well before the final whistle. Manuel Akanji nearly added to the tally with a header that crashed off the crossbar in the 66th minute, though the score would not change again.
A dominance reflected in the numbers
The stats confirm Internazionale's clear superiority over the full 90 minutes: they controlled the ball, created more chances and were more clinical in front of goal.
| Stat | Internazionale | Monza |
|---|---|---|
| Possession (%) | 70.5 | 29.5 |
| Shots | 13 | 7 |
| Shots on target | 5 | 3 |
| Corners | 3 | 3 |
| Passes | 709 | 291 |
| Fouls committed | 5 | 14 |
In terms of xG (expected goals calculated after the fact based on shot location), Inter generated 1.589 compared to Monza's 1.187, a smaller gap than the final scoreline suggests, which points to the home side being especially clinical in front of goal at key moments in the match.
What was projected versus what happened
Beforehand, our model had projected a 70% chance of an Internazionale win, a 20% chance of a draw and just 10% for a Monza win, with total expected goals of 3.13 (2.32 for the home side and 0.81 for the visitors). The final result, a resounding 4-1, ended up being even more favorable for Inter than that projection anticipated, though the path there was not as straightforward as the forecast suggested: Monza managed to level the score temporarily before the home side's superiority took over clearly in the second half.
What the match leaves behind
With this result, Internazionale opened the tournament with 3 points after a win in their first match played, while Monza picks up its first loss without points. Still, with this being just the first matchday for both clubs, the standings say little yet about the real level of either squad. What was clear at the Meazza was Inter's ability to respond after being pegged back, and the ruthlessness of a second half in which Esposito, drifting in and out of the opposing box with sharp instincts, was a key figure both for his goal and his assist on the fourth.
