Joaquín Freitas leaves River, signs with Flamengo as new forward

Jersey number 30, a video looking into the camera and a handprint stamped as a seal. That's how Flamengo introduced its new forward. The scene, simple and direct, confirmed what had already been brewing in Núñez for days: Joaquín Freitas has left River to become a Mengao player.

The Rio de Janeiro club paid $15 million for 80% of the rights to the forward who came up through Acassuso, a figure that makes clear how much interest a player who hadn't even reached three dozen top flight appearances managed to generate in such a short time. In fact, Freitas departs with exactly 30 matches played in River's shirt, a curious number he now also wears on his back in Brazil. The contract he signed with Flamengo runs long term: he's tied to the club through 2031.

The official welcome came quickly. "Welcome, brother! We wish you many titles and great performances in the shirt. Argentine Joaquín Freitas is another addition to Mengao," the club's official account posted, accompanying the message with images of the forward already dressed in training gear.

Before boarding his flight to Brazil, Freitas took a few minutes to say goodbye to River's fans and look back on his time at the club. He did so in a grateful tone, almost taking quick stock of something that had caught even him off guard given how fast it all happened.

There was a separate chapter for Eduardo Coudet, the coach who had him under his wing during his final stretch at River. Freitas didn't hide his fondness for Chacho, though he also didn't dodge the question of position: he didn't always play where he likes best, but he took on those roles with his mind set on getting minutes.

I'm super grateful to Chacho. He and his coaching staff always treated me great. I ended up playing in a position that wasn't mine, but my intention was always to play, to contribute wherever I was needed, and if that's how the coach saw it, it was because he saw I could develop in that position, so I was at peace with it.Joaquín Freitas

That same flexibility is what he's bringing to Rio de Janeiro. Asked what role he expects to fill on his new team, the forward was clear: he doesn't plan to set conditions, just to adapt as quickly as possible and earn his place.

Whatever's needed. I'm here to contribute. If it can be as a forward, that's where I'll be. If not, as a winger or a midfielder, but always to contribute. Adapt as fast as possible, get the minutes I want, that I expect, and if we can win a title, all the better.Joaquín Freitas
