Juan Rodríguez, the Uruguayan gem Pisacane compares to Diego López

Some players need several months to settle into a new league. Juan Rodríguez wasn't one of them. The Uruguayan center back, just 21 years old, locked down a starting spot at Cagliari from the very first minute of the season and today he's one of the reasons the Sardinian club has been the early surprise of Serie A.

The defender, born in San Ramón and developed at Peñarol, has played in every single one of the Italian club's matches so far this season: all five league games and both Coppa Italia fixtures. Not a single absence. And it hasn't just been about showing up: he's brought clean clearances, solid coverage, strong aerial play and anticipation that reveal a center back who reads the game well despite his young age.

His path on the field says a lot about how his role has grown. On matchday one, away at Parma in a 1-0 win, he paired up in central defense with captain Alessandro Deiola. That same partnership held for the loss to Inter (1-0) and for wins over Lecce and Atalanta. It wasn't until matchday five, on the road at Udinese, that Pisacane switched things up: he moved to a back three alongside Colombian defender Yerry Mina and Zé Pedro, with Deiola pushed forward into midfield. Cagliari won 1-0 thanks to a goal from Daniel Maldini, one of Paolo Maldini's sons.

Along the way, Rodríguez has already gone up against heavyweight forwards like Lautaro Martínez, Franck Kessié, Gianluca Scamacca and Nicolo Zaniolo, and he's held his own. He's also become a key piece in the team's build-up play, the kind that looks to break lines with vertical passes rather than simply clearing the ball.

Pisacane's praise and the comparison to Diego López

Cagliari coach Fabio Pisacane spoke Monday at a press conference about the Uruguayan's recent call-up to Diego Forlán's national team for the tour of Asia, and he didn't hold back on the praise.

The 40-year-old coach went even further in describing the player's growth, and didn't hesitate to compare him to a Uruguayan soccer legend.

That's no random comparison: Pisacane had Diego López as his coach at Cagliari during the 2017/2018 season, so he knows exactly what he's talking about when he draws that parallel.

On the defender's future, who Cagliari signed in mid-2025, the coach was just as emphatic: "I think he still hasn't shown his full potential. Even he isn't fully aware of how good he is. The credit belongs to whoever brought him here, because they signed a true gem."

Rodríguez didn't make his top-flight debut until 2024, playing for Boston River. Even then, that same quality he now shows off in Serie A was already on display. Jadson Viera described it in a 2025 interview with ESPN, recalling the defender's first training session: "The through balls were what stood out, way more than usual." That trait, finding the pass that breaks lines, is exactly what has him among Forlán's call-ups today and one of the pleasant surprises of Italian soccer.
