Julián Álvarez Wants Out of Atlético, but Barcelona Is His Only Option and the Club Refuses to Deal

With just days left before the European transfer window closes, one name keeps coming up: Julián Álvarez. The Argentine forward, a key piece for Atlético Madrid, is caught in a saga that mixes eye-watering figures, a club that won't let him leave, and a fan base that has already turned its back on him at the Metropolitano.

Let's start with the numbers, since they tell their own story. Álvarez joined Atlético in 2024 from Manchester City for around 75 million euros. He's in his third season in LaLiga and needs just one more goal to reach 50 for the club. That kind of output would normally be cause for celebration. But the 26-year-old made it clear this summer that he wants to leave, and that changed everything.

Barcelona has been chasing him for months. According to ESPN, the interest first took shape back in January as a plan to replace Robert Lewandowski, and it intensified after the Polish striker's move to Chicago Fire and Ferran Torres's transfer to PSG for 55 million euros. Álvarez himself didn't hide his stance when he spoke to ESPN in July, saying that "a transfer would be best for everyone involved." Barça, as club president Joan Laporta confirmed, still has an offer of just over 100 million euros on the table.

The problem is that Atlético, led by Miguel Ángel Gil Marín, won't even sit down to negotiate with Barça and hasn't hidden its frustration, going as far as filing a complaint against the Catalan club with FIFA and the Spanish soccer federation over what it called an attempt at an irregular signing. Things got so tense that last week it emerged Barça itself, tired of the standstill, had started looking at other striker options.

That's where Arsenal comes in, moving quietly but patiently. The key figure is Andrea Berta, now the Gunners' sporting director, who negotiated Álvarez's contract back when he worked at Atlético. Few people know the player, his camp, and Atlético's front office as well as he does. The English club knows Álvarez's preference is Barça, so they're playing it cautiously: making clear they're interested, that they'd offer a competitive salary, and that they'd break their transfer record (the 100 million pounds paid for Declan Rice) without pushing too hard. There's even talk, unconfirmed, that Viktor Gyökeres could move the other way if it helps get a deal done.

A Fan Base That's Had Enough

What happened Sunday at the Metropolitano, during the 2-2 draw with Villarreal, was hard to watch. Boos when his name was announced, boos while he warmed up, boos when he came on in the second half. After the match, the club suggested Álvarez head straight down the tunnel instead of joining his teammates to acknowledge the stands. The idea was to shield him, but it only underscored how isolated he's become.

Even with that atmosphere, Atlético keeps insisting it won't sell him, especially not to Barcelona. Gil Marín was blunt a few days ago:
