Julián Álvarez Stays at Atlético After Turning Down Barcelona's $100 Million-Plus Bid

Summer closed with Julián Álvarez still in Atlético red and white, but the background noise hasn't fully died down. Dani Olmo, with all the calm in the world, said what plenty of Barcelona fans had been thinking for weeks: he doesn't understand why Atlético Madrid wouldn't even sit down to talk.

Barcelona put an offer of more than 100 million euros on the table for Álvarez earlier this summer. Atlético's answer was blunt: total rejection, with no interest in opening talks. And it didn't end there. The Madrid club went as far as filing a complaint against Barça with FIFA and Spain's soccer federation, the RFEF, accusing the Catalan club, in its view, of making improper contact with the Argentine striker.

Atlético's own CEO, Miguel Ángel Gil Marín, made the club's position clear last week, saying he would "never" let Álvarez leave for Camp Nou. It's a stance Olmo, speaking at an event in his hometown of Terrassa, still couldn't quite wrap his head around.

What's striking is that Álvarez himself had told ESPN back in June about his desire for a change of scenery. According to sources close to the player, he even turned down offers from Arsenal, holding out hope that a move to Barça would eventually come together. That wasn't the only sign of encouragement: just last week, Joan Laporta was still publicly keeping alive the hope of landing the Argentine.

Gabriel Jesus, the Plan B That Became the Solution

In the end, market reality forced Barça to look elsewhere. On Tuesday, with Atlético's door firmly shut, the club turned to Brazilian forward Gabriel Jesus, who arrived on an initial deal worth 10 million euros. He became Barça's sixth first-team signing of the summer, joining names like Anthony Gordon and Karim Adeyemi, even though Álvarez had been the top attacking target for months.

Bringing in a No. 9 had been a direct request from Hansi Flick following the departures of Robert Lewandowski and Ferran Torres. Even so, sources inside the club say Álvarez remains on the wish list for the future. "There will be more transfer windows," said one source close to the Barça camp, leaving the door slightly ajar for later.

Meanwhile, Olmo prefers to look forward: "Like I said, life goes on, this doesn't stop. We expect to have an excellent season thanks to the internal competition in the squad, since we've signed well."

On the Atlético side, Álvarez has already returned to training with the group after several days away that cost him a spot in Saturday's win over Sevilla. His only appearance so far this season, a 2-2 draw against Villarreal on August 23 at the Metropolitano, ended with the home crowd whistling at the Argentine. Now, with the transfer window closed and the player still on the roster, Diego Simeone has a chance to bring him back into the fold gradually, with three straight away matches coming up: Athletic Club, Liverpool and Real Sociedad, before Atlético return home on September 16 against Osasuna.
