Mikuláš Konečný Sees Red 53 Seconds Into His Slavia Debut in Champions League

Some debuts are worth framing, and some are best forgotten. Mikuláš Konečný's falls squarely into the second category: 53 seconds on the field, a red card, and an agonizing defeat that left Slavia Prague with the bitterest possible taste at the start of its Champions League campaign.

The match, played in Prague against RC Lens, was level at 0-0 at halftime. Looking to freshen up his defense, coach Jindřich Trpišovský decided to send on Konečný, a 20-year-old center back who had, up to that Thursday, only a handful of appearances with the first team. Nobody on the Czech bench could have imagined what was about to happen.

Moments after the restart, a mistake in Slavia's buildup sent Abdallah Sima racing toward the box. Konečný, who had just come on, rushed out to cut him off and brought him down at the edge of the penalty area. Greek referee Vassilios Fotias initially waved play on, not awarding a foul. But VAR asked him to review the play on the monitor, and after checking the replay, he ended up showing the Czech defender a straight red card. The clock read just 50 seconds since he'd entered the match; the sending off was confirmed 53 seconds after he'd first stepped onto the field.

What's striking is that, despite playing with a man down for almost the entire second half, Slavia didn't fold. Quite the opposite: the home side took the lead not once, but twice. The second goal, in fact, came late, in the 88th minute, when it looked like the result was already sealed in the Czechs' favor despite being down to 10 men.

A Heart-Stopping Finish

But soccer has a way of doing this. Lens, unwilling to accept defeat despite being a man up, pushed hard in stoppage time and turned the match around in a matter of minutes: they scored in the 91st minute and again in the 93rd, snatching all three points from Prague in a lightning comeback that left everyone stunned.

So what could have been a remarkable defensive achievement for Slavia, holding onto two separate leads while playing a man down for nearly the whole second half, instead turned into one of the most painful defeats imaginable: losing in stoppage time after leading twice.

For Konečný, the night could hardly have gone worse: he came on, committed a foul, saw red, and then had to watch from the locker room as his team fought back, went ahead, and ultimately fell in the final minutes anyway. A debut he'll surely remember, though certainly not for the reasons he would have wanted.
