Roma blow past Udinese with four first-half goals in 2-5 rout

Cristante, Mora, Malen and Ndicka put Roma up 0-4 before halftime, and Gasperini's side held off a late Udinese rally to seal the win and stay on the podium in Serie A.

Roma blow past Udinese with four first-half goals in 2-5 rout

Four goals in just 27 minutes. That's how fast Roma put the first half away at the Bluenergy Stadium, where they wound up thrashing Udinese 2-5 after the hosts never found a way to stop the bleeding. The final score looks close, but the real story of the match was written between the 9th and the 36th minute, when Gian Piero Gasperini's side ran over everything in front of them.

The first goal came early: in the 9th minute, Bryan Cristante headed home a Wesley cross to make it 0-1. From there, Roma never let up. In the 30th minute, Rodrigo Mora finished with his right foot off a Cristante assist for 0-2. Two minutes later, in the 32nd, Donyell Malen stretched the lead further with a left-footed strike, and just before the break, in the 36th minute, Evan Ndicka headed in a corner delivered by Matias Soule to make it 0-4 at halftime.

Udinese tried to fight back, and they did manage a response, though it was never enough. Right at the start of the second half, in the 49th minute, Nicolo Zaniolo pulled one back with a left-footed shot from the center of the box. The hosts kept pushing, and in the 77th minute Matteo Palma struck with his right foot to make it 2-4 and bring some tension back to the stadium. But Roma still had something left: in stoppage time, in the 91st minute, Daniele Ghilardi sealed the scoring with a right-footed finish assisted by Santiago Castro, making it a final 2-5.

The numbers behind the rout

What stands out is that Roma's dominance wasn't total in every category: Udinese actually had more total shots, but the difference came down to clinical finishing and clear-cut chances.

According to our expected goals estimate calculated from the match's shots, Roma generated 2.993 xG against Udinese's 1.774, a gap that backs up what the scoreline showed: this wasn't an inflated result, the visitors created plenty more danger in their chances.

What the preview said versus what happened on the field

Before the match we had projected Roma as the clear favorite, with a 60% chance of winning compared to 16% for Udinese and 24% for a draw. We also estimated a total of 2.86 expected goals, split 0.92 for the hosts and 1.94 for the visitors. The result went in the direction the forecast pointed to, but blew past it: seven goals in total, with Roma essentially deciding the match in the first half, well beyond what that pre-match expected goals figure anticipated.

What it means in the standings

In the Serie A table, Roma reach 10 matches played with 7 wins, 3 draws and no losses, sitting third with 24 points. Udinese, on the other hand, sit 19th with just 5 points from 10 matches played (1 win, 2 draws and 7 losses). The gap between the two sides in the standings is 19 points, a fairly accurate reflection of what played out on the field at the Bluenergy Stadium.

For Udinese, the hard truth is in the goal difference: with this result, Kosta Runjaic's side continues to struggle to find defensive solidity match after match, while Gasperini's Roma are confirming an attack that, once it gets going, is very hard to contain.
