Lamine Yamal vs. Mbappé: the tightest Ballon d'Or race in 20 years

Mbappé leads in goals and assists, but Yamal has the edge where it matters most: titles with Barça and Spain.

Lamine Yamal vs. Mbappé: the tightest Ballon d'Or race in 20 years

Rarely has the Ballon d'Or race been this close. And this time, the fight has a Spanish surname attached to it: Lamine Yamal and Kylian Mbappé are leading the race for soccer's most coveted individual award, in what is shaping up to be one of the tightest votes in two decades.

LaLiga's two biggest stars arrive with different arguments, but ones that carry equal weight. Mbappé finished the 2025-26 season as the all-time leading scorer in World Cup history, while Yamal lifted the World Cup with Spain. That, really, sums up the entire debate: individual numbers favor the Frenchman, but what Yamal brings to his team's trophy count tips the scale the other way.

The eligibility window for the 2027 Ballon d'Or runs from August 3, 2025 to July 19, 2026, the date of the World Cup final. That means everything from this past season counts. Over that stretch, both players featured in almost the same number of matches: 57 for Yamal, 60 for Mbappé, each a key piece for both club and country.

Mbappé hands out goals, Yamal hands out titles

The numbers confirm what was already known about the Real Madrid forward: he averaged nearly a goal a game, with 58 goals in 60 matches and 13 assists in 2025-26. The problem is that neither Real Madrid nor France managed to win a major title, and that makes it two seasons in a row now.

Yamal, on the other hand, turned his individual form into collective success. With 25 goals and 20 assists in 57 matches, at just 19 years old he won his third league title (also being named the competition's best player), added another Spanish Super Cup and claimed his first World Cup.

Where things even out is in creating chances for others: Mbappé finished with more key passes (120 to 111) and more chances created (133 to 131) than Yamal, who also missed the final month of the league season with a hamstring injury.

Where the Barça winger pulls clearly ahead is in his ability to unbalance defenses: his knack for generating danger out wide pushed his dribbling numbers to 559, far above Mbappé's 327 and the highest figure of any player in Europe. That boldness comes at a cost, though: Yamal lost the ball 1,181 times, compared to 699 turnovers for Mbappé.

Who performed better in the games that matter

To measure performance in the toughest matchups, the season was split into two groups: one covering World Cup games, Champions League knockout matches from the round of 16 onward, and league clashes against last season's top five teams (Barcelona, Real Madrid, Atlético Madrid, Villarreal and Real Betis), and another covering every other match.

In that first group, Mbappé's World Cup carried huge weight: 17 goals and six assists in 18 matches, compared to Yamal's nine goals and one assist in the same number of games. Still, the collective results back the Catalan: his team won 14 of those 18 matches and lost only two, while Mbappé's teams won 12 and lost five.

In the rest of the season's matches, the scoring gap widens in the Frenchman's favor: 41 goals to 16. But there, Yamal answers with 19 assists, nearly triple Mbappé's seven. As for wins, they're dead even: each player's team won 31 matches.

The winner will be decided at the ceremony in London on October 26, just one day after Barcelona hosts Real Madrid in the season's first Clásico. That day, a panel of 100 journalists from around the world will determine who takes home the award, at a gala that will also hand out the women's Ballon d'Or along with honors for best young player, goalkeeper, coach and club of the year.
