Leon Suffers but Rallies Late to Beat Juarez 2-1 in Stoppage Time
An own goal, a 93rd minute penalty and an Alvarado strike in the 98th gave Leon an agonizing win that pulls them closer to the top of the table, while Juarez remains last in Liga MX.

Leon had to wait until stoppage time to settle a match that got complicated right when it looked like it was under control. At Estadio Leon, Javier Gandolfi's side beat Gustavo Lema's Juarez 2-1, but the final score doesn't come close to capturing how wild the closing stretch was: an own goal, a penalty in the 93rd minute and the winner in the 98th made for a nerve-wracking finish in Liga MX.
The first half went by without much drama and ended 0-0, with Oscar Estupinan testing the keeper with a header and a left-footed shot without success, while Ismael Diaz answered for the home side with an attempt that Sebastian Jurado saved low to his left. There were flashes here and there, but nothing to break the deadlock.
A finish decided in ten minutes
The match finally broke open in the 75th minute, when Francisco Nevarez put the ball into his own net following a VAR review that confirmed the goal a minute later: Leon 1, Juarez 0. With the lead in hand, it looked like all three points would stay at home. But Juarez refused to fold: in the 88th minute they were awarded a penalty for a foul by Jesus Lara inside the box, and although the goal took a while to be confirmed due to the review, Estupinan made no mistake from the spot in the 93rd minute to make it 1-1.
The tie lasted just five minutes. Deep into stoppage time, in the 98th minute, Alfonso Alvarado showed up in the middle of the box to finish with his right foot, low and inside the post, off a cross from Edgar Guerra, sealing a 2-1 win for Leon just as the match was winding down.
The numbers behind the result
The stats show a tight match, with Juarez even sharper in some categories despite the loss:
| Stat | Leon | Juarez |
|---|---|---|
| Possession (%) | 55.7 | 44.3 |
| Shots | 7 | 9 |
| Shots on target | 3 | 1 |
| Big chances | 1 | 2 |
| Corners | 1 | 4 |
| Passes | 389 | 304 |
| Fouls committed | 14 | 14 |
Leon controlled the ball more and created more danger on target, but according to our post-match xG estimate based on shot locations, Juarez actually generated more real threat: 1.712 versus 0.856 for the home side. A number that shows just how close this match really was beyond the final score.
What we projected versus what happened
Ahead of the match we published a projection giving Leon a 51% chance to win, against 26% for a draw and 23% for a visitor's win, with expected goals of 1.83 for the home side and 1.19 for the visitors. The result ended up matching that forecast: the home team won, though the path there was far bumpier than expected, with an own goal, a stoppage time penalty and the winner coming in second half injury time.
What it means in the standings
The win puts Leon in fifth place with 17 points from 10 matches played, just three points off the lead held by Toluca. Juarez, on the other hand, remains in last place with just 3 points from 10 matches, a 14 point gap to Leon that reflects the completely different moments both teams are living through in the tournament. For the border club, picking up points bit by bit is becoming more urgent by the week; for Leon, these kinds of hard fought wins in the closing minutes could matter a great deal in the fight for a spot among the top places in the table.
