Lewandowski Puts Chicago Fire Ahead, But Casemiro Levels for Inter Miami at Soldier Field

Robert Lewandowski needed just nine minutes to get Soldier Field on its feet. A right-footed strike from the center of the box, top left corner, and Chicago Fire FC jumped ahead of Inter Miami CF. But the 1-1 scoreline that closed out the night tells a story of an immediate response: barely into the second half, Casemiro equalized to leave the final result level in MLS action.

Lewandowski's goal came from a cross into the box by Andrew Gutman that the Pole only had to guide with quality into the top corner. It was the first blow in a match that opened with both defenses looking somewhat jittery: there were early fouls from Telasco Segovia, who picked up a yellow card as soon as the third minute, and Lewandowski himself came close to trouble with a handball shortly after.

With the score at 1-0, Inter Miami took control of the ball and began pushing through Lionel Messi, who tested the Chicago goal several times before the break: a shot that grazed the crossbar in the 18th minute, another that was saved low to the left in the 22nd, and a couple more attempts near the end of the first half. Germán Berterame also gave a warning with a shot that flew just wide of the post. And it came fast. Barely into the second half, in the 47th minute, a corner kick from Lionel Messi found the head of Casemiro inside the box, and he buried it into the top left corner to make it 1-1, a score that would not change for the rest of the match. In fact, before that goal, Miami itself had already given notice with two shots in a row right after the restart, one from Messi and another from Berterame, that foreshadowed the blow.

Back and Forth Without a Winner

After the equalizer, the match stayed open but neither side found a second goal. Chicago had its chances through Jack Elliott, Anton Salétros and, once the substitutions came in, Sergio Oregel Jr. and Puso Dithejane, who headed a shot just over the crossbar in the 82nd minute. Inter Miami, for its part, kept creating chances through Rodrigo De Paul and a Messi who never stopped testing from outside the box well into stoppage time, which stretched to six minutes due to the various stoppages in the second half.

The numbers reflect pretty well what played out on the field: Inter Miami controlled more of the ball and doubled its opponent's shot total, putting seven shots on target compared to just three for Chicago. Even so, according to our own xG estimate calculated from the shots taken in the match, Chicago finished with 1.559 expected goals to Inter Miami's 1.224, a figure suggesting the home side was more efficient with the chances it had, despite seeing less of the ball.

Heading into the match, we had projected a tight contest, with a 41% probability of a home win, 38% for Inter Miami and 21% for a draw, along with a combined total of 4.46 expected goals between both teams. The final result, with one goal apiece, fell well short of that offensive expectation, though the draw did end up being, of the three scenarios, the least likely on paper, and the one that ultimately happened.

What the Point Means

In the Eastern Conference standings, Inter Miami remains in second place with 44 points from 24 matches (12 wins, 8 draws and 4 losses), while Chicago Fire FC sits fourth with 39 points from 23 matches (11 wins, 6 draws and 6 losses). The gap between the two sides in the standings is 5 points, and this draw doesn't change that margin much: both teams add one point but essentially maintain the same distance they had coming into Soldier Field.
