The Players Who Turned Out for Both Barcelona and PSG, From Ronaldinho to Dembele

From Messi and Neymar to Ibrahimovic and Thiago Motta, we look back at the players who suited up for both clubs and where they left their biggest mark.

The Players Who Turned Out for Both Barcelona and PSG, From Ronaldinho to Dembele

Barcelona and PSG are set to cross paths again in the Champions League, and the intrigue around this matchup always comes with a list of names familiar to both locker rooms. Quite a few players have, at some point in their careers, moved from one side of this rivalry to the other. Some left a far deeper mark at one club than the other; others split their legacy almost evenly. Let's run through who they are.

The ones who defined an era at Barca

Ronaldinho is the obvious starting point. He arrived at PSG in 2001 from Gremio and spent two seasons in France showing flashes of what was to come. But it was at Barcelona, starting in 2003, that he turned into a superstar: he won two league titles, the 2006 Champions League and the 2005 Ballon d'Or. His time in Paris was an important stepping stone, sure, but his defining story was written in Barcelona.

Something similar, though with some nuance, happened with Dani Alves. The Brazilian fullback was a key piece of Barcelona during one of its most glorious stretches, picking up three Champions League titles among the trophies he won across two spells at the club. In 2017 he moved to PSG, where he spent two seasons adding domestic titles and lending experience to a project looking to grow in Europe.

Lionel Messi belongs on this list almost by historical obligation. He built an entire era at Barcelona: endless trophies, scoring records and four Champions League titles. After leaving the club in 2021, he spent two seasons in Paris, where he won league titles and shared the attack with Neymar and Kylian Mbappe. But his PSG stint never carried the weight of his Barcelona years, and his place on this list owes more to the scale of his career than to any legend built in France.

The ones who found their best form in Paris

The reverse case is represented by Zlatan Ibrahimovic. At Barcelona he had just one season, 2009-2010, winning titles but never quite fitting in. At PSG it was a completely different story: between 2012 and 2016 he became one of the great figureheads of the Paris project, scoring a huge number of goals that helped cement the club's dominance in France.

Neymar also has a tale of two cities. At Barcelona, between 2013 and 2017, he formed one of modern soccer's most memorable attacking trios alongside Messi and Luis Suarez, crowned by the 2015 Champions League title. His record transfer to PSG in 2017 made him the central figure of the French project, where he added several domestic titles, though without repeating the European glory he enjoyed in Barcelona.

Ousmane Dembele offers another interesting comparison: six seasons at Barcelona starting in 2017, marked by injuries and inconsistency despite his obvious talent for breaking down defenses, followed by a different present since joining PSG in 2023, where he's found a leading role in attack.

Less remembered names, but just as real

Thiago Motta came up through Barcelona's youth system and was part of the first team for several seasons before moving to PSG in 2012, where he became an important midfield piece during a key growth phase for the club. His career stands as one of the clearest examples of a long stint at both clubs, even if he never reached the international recognition of other names on this list.

Maxwell played at Barcelona between 2009 and 2012 as part of a squad loaded with stars, then wound down his career at PSG in 2017 after several seasons as a regular, contributing to the club's consolidation as a French powerhouse.

Ludovic Giuly played for Barcelona between 2004 and 2007 and was part of the team that won it all in Europe in 2006, before returning to France to play for PSG between 2008 and 2011. And Lucas Digne, who had already come through PSG before joining Barcelona in 2016, spent two seasons there as an option at left back without managing to regularly displace Jordi Alba, before continuing his career at other European clubs.

These are different stories, carrying different weight at each club, but all of them connect two teams that have written major chapters in recent European soccer history.
