Mammana discharged from hospital after suffering rib fractures in Vélez-Newell's
The defender progressed well after the collision with his own goalkeeper, though there is still no timeline for his return to action.
Five days after the collision that left everyone with their heart in their throat, the news that all of Liniers had been waiting for finally arrived: Emmanuel Mammana has been discharged from the hospital. The Vélez defender was released just one day after doctors removed his chest tube, following what the club itself described as a "favorable evolution."
To understand the relief, you have to go back to the moment of the scare. The center back suffered trauma to the right hemithorax that led to multiple rib fractures and a pneumothorax, the result of a collision with his own goalkeeper, Tomás Marchiori, during the 1-1 draw with Newell's in Rosario. It was one of those plays that brings an entire stadium to a standstill, the kind that makes the final score feel almost beside the point.
The first medical report already hinted at how serious things were: Mammana underwent surgery at Sanatorio de la Mujer, where doctors inserted a pleural drainage tube while the medical staff waited to see how he progressed before clearing him to be transferred to Buenos Aires.
The day after the injury, the first encouraging signs arrived. Vélez shared the update on social media:
Emmanuel Mammana is hospitalized at Clínica Zabala in Buenos Aires and continues to show very good progress. Routine tests are being carried out to monitor and follow up on his condition.Vélez Sarsfield
From there, each medical update brought a little more peace of mind, right up until Wednesday morning, when the club confirmed he had been fully discharged. It was a fast turnaround given how alarming the initial images of the injury had been.
Confirmed absence, no return date in sight
What is clear is that Mammana will not be available to Guillermo Barros Schelotto this Sunday, when Vélez hosts Tigre in their last match before the pause for the FIFA date. His recovery will take time, and the club has been careful not to set deadlines.
In fact, there is still no estimated date for the defender to rejoin training with the group, and people at the club acknowledge it is unlikely he will see any minutes for the rest of 2026. Both the player and the club would rather not rush things: the goal is for Mammana to go into next preseason in peak condition, without setbacks or relapses.
For now, with the medical discharge secured, the important part has been settled: the scare is over, and the defender's health is on the right track.
