Nashville SC and New York City FC Play to Scoreless Draw at Yankee Stadium

Mukhtar rattled the crossbar twice, but Nashville couldn't turn its dominance into goals in an MLS clash.

Nashville SC and New York City FC Play to Scoreless Draw at Yankee Stadium

Hany Mukhtar's crossbar said no twice, and the final score stayed at 0-0 at Yankee Stadium. Nashville SC dominated large stretches of the match against New York City FC, but ended up crashing into the woodwork and settling for a point that, in the end, means more to one side than the other given how the standings look.

The MLS clash offered few surprises in how it played out, but no resolution either: both sides created clear chances and neither could finish the job in front of goal.

A Back and Forth First Half

From the opening whistle, New York City FC came out looking to spring a surprise on the road. Nicolas Fernandez Mercau tested the defense in the 9th minute and Benie Traore followed up on the next play, both shots turned away. Shortly after, Agustin Ojeda fired a shot that grazed the left post in the 14th minute, one of the home side's best chances of the first half.

Nashville SC answered with patience. Sam Surridge and Elias Saad both tried their luck from inside the box without finding the target, and in the 17th minute Mukhtar gave the first warning with a free kick that skimmed just wide of the crossbar. The warning repeated itself in the 42nd minute, when Mukhtar struck the woodwork again, this time with a shot from the middle of the box. The first half ended scoreless despite the back and forth, with no stoppage time added by the fourth official.

Second Half: More Nashville, Same Result

The second half opened with Nashville SC stepping on the gas. Sam Surridge tested Matt Freese twice in the span of three minutes (47th and 48th), and Mukhtar kept probing from outside the box on several occasions, including another dangerous free kick in the 77th minute that once again skimmed the crossbar. The visitors' pressure was constant, but New York City FC held firm, leaning on substitutions to slow the pace of the match.

The game also had its share of cards: Andy Najar, Patrick Yazbek, Hany Mukhtar, Kevin O'Toole and Malachi Jones were all booked, a reflection of a physical contest that saw 14 fouls from the home side and 13 from the visitors. With two minutes of stoppage time, there were no further scares and the scoreline held firm to the final whistle.

What the Numbers Say

The stats back up what was on display on the field: Nashville SC took charge of the game, with more possession, more shots and more completed passes, but couldn't turn that edge into a goal.

Fouls committed1413

The xG generated in the match, an in-house estimate based on shot data, supports the idea of an evenly matched contest in both boxes: 0.97 for New York City FC against 1.19 for Nashville SC, figures that show a slightly sharper visiting side but without a massive gap.

Before kickoff, our projection gave Nashville SC a 43% chance of winning, against 27% for New York City FC and 30% for a draw, with total expected goals of 2.44. The scoreless outcome fell well short of that forecast, which had pointed to a more decisive match with more goals.

What the Point Means in the Standings

Nashville SC remains atop the East group with 53 points from 23 matches (16 wins, 5 draws, 2 losses), and this draw does nothing to change its position at the front of the table. New York City FC, meanwhile, stays in seventh place with 29 points from 23 matches (7 wins, 8 draws, 8 losses), 24 points behind its opponent on the night. A match that produced chances, hit the woodwork more than once and plenty of insistence, but ultimately brought no reward for either side.
