Nashville SC rallies from 0-2 down to beat New York Red Bulls 3-2 in stoppage time
The Eastern Conference leader overturned a two-goal deficit with two own goals and a 90th minute Surridge header to seal the win at GEODIS Park.

It was 0-2 on the scoreboard, at home, with barely 39 minutes on the clock, and Nashville SC still walked away with all three points. GEODIS Park witnessed one of those comebacks that leave a mark: a final score of 3-2 over New York Red Bulls, with the winning goal arriving deep into stoppage time.
The start was a nightmare for the home side. Julian Hall put the Red Bulls ahead in the 33rd minute with a right footed finish from the center of the box, set up by a through ball from Adri Mehmeti. Six minutes later, Rafael Mosquera, who had just come on after Cameron Harper went down injured, doubled the lead with a close range left footed strike on the end of a counterattack built by Cade Cowell. New York RB had the game under control at 0-2 and looked on course for a statement win atop the East.
But before the break came the first sign that the story was far from over: in the 44th minute, an own goal from Tim Parker pulled Nashville back into the match, and the first half ended 1-2. In the second half, the home side kept pressing, with a crossbar from Reed Baker-Whiting and another from Sam Surridge, plus a post from Maxwell Woledzi, until the pressure finally paid off in the 77th minute, when VAR confirmed an own goal by Julian Bazan following a move started by Cristian Espinoza. That made it 2-2 and blew the game wide open. The finish came deep into stoppage time: in the 90th minute, Sam Surridge headed home from close range, low into the net, off an Espinoza cross from a corner kick, sealing the final 3-2.
The numbers behind the comeback
Nashville's dominance with the ball was clear across the full 90 minutes, and the stats back it up: more possession, more shots and, above all, far more corners that kept generating danger in front of the visitors' goal.
| Stat | Nashville SC | New York RB |
|---|---|---|
| Possession (%) | 61.3 | 38.7 |
| Shots | 21 | 14 |
| Shots on target | 7 | 4 |
| Big chances | 5 | 3 |
| Corners | 12 | 3 |
| Passes | 504 | 323 |
| Fouls committed | 5 | 13 |
In our xG estimate calculated from the match's shots, Nashville generated 3.32 expected goals to the Red Bulls' 2.76, a gap that confirms the home side's dominance wasn't just about possession: it translated into real scoring chances too, many of them crashing off the woodwork before the ball finally found the net.
It's worth remembering that the road to the winning goal was anything but smooth: in the 16th minute, the referee awarded New York RB a penalty for a foul by Elias Saad on Cade Cowell, but Cowell himself wasted the chance in the 18th minute with a spot kick that was saved. Had it gone in, the story might have unfolded very differently.
What the preview said and what actually happened
Before kickoff, our projection gave Nashville SC a 67% chance of winning, with a 22% chance of a draw and just 11% for a visiting win, and we projected expected goals of 2.05 for the home side and 0.75 for the visitors. The final result, 3-2, ended up matching the favoritism we gave Nashville, though the path there was far bumpier than expected: the Red Bulls jumped out to a two-goal lead and forced a comeback that didn't arrive until stoppage time.
What the result means in the standings
Nashville SC came into this match as leaders of the Eastern Conference with 74 points from 33 matches played, built on 22 wins, 8 draws and 3 losses, with a goal difference of 44. New York Red Bulls, meanwhile, sat in tenth place with 39 points from 33 matches (11 wins, 6 draws and 16 losses), 35 points behind their opponent on the night. The comeback didn't just hand Nashville three more points: it was also a show of character against a team that, despite its spot in the standings, made things difficult for long stretches of the match at GEODIS Park.
