Nigeria opens qualifying push against Madagascar for AFCON 2027's last open spot

Friday brings something far tenser than a typical qualifying opener for Nigeria. The Super Eagles host Madagascar at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium in Uyo to launch their road to the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations, then travel to Bissau to face Guinea-Bissau just four days later. The detail that reshapes the entire picture: Tanzania, the fourth team in Group L, has already secured its ticket as co-host alongside Kenya and Uganda. That leaves Nigeria, Madagascar and Guinea-Bissau fighting, in practical terms, for a single available spot.

With that format, every point carries double weight, especially the ones earned at home. And Nigeria knows all too well what a poor start can cost: just a few months ago it lived through a nightmare World Cup qualifying campaign that ended with elimination after a long and painful road.

There's also unfinished business on the field. Madagascar hasn't faced Nigeria since that 2-0 win in Alexandria during the 2019 AFCON, when the Eagles fielded a backup lineup out of overconfidence and paid dearly for it: they lost top spot in the group and ran into eventual champion Cameroon in the round of 16. Nigeria came back to win that tie 3-2 and finished third in the tournament, but that match against the Malagasy side also marked John Mikel Obi's international farewell, subbed off in the 58th minute after a flat performance and never wearing the shirt again.

Chelle demands a fast start

Coach Chelle has spent the week stressing that Nigeria cannot repeat past mistakes. Before he arrived in January, Nigeria had strung together draws against Lesotho, Zimbabwe and South Africa, plus a loss in Benin, during World Cup qualifying. Under his charge the team rebuilt itself, winning four and drawing two of the remaining six matches, including a resounding 4-0 win over Benin that sent them into the CAF playoff, then beating Gabon 4-1 in extra time before falling on penalties to the Democratic Republic of Congo.

Taking all six points on offer against Madagascar and Guinea-Bissau would give Nigeria exactly the momentum it lacked on the road to the World Cup.

Goalkeeping battle and the Osimhen void

Stanley Nwabali is back in the squad alongside Maduka Okoye and Arthur Okonkwo, giving Chelle three genuine options between the posts. Okoye arrived only the day before the match because of Napoli commitments, which hurts his chances of starting, while Okonkwo, with just two caps and two clean sheets in the Unity Cup, keeps building his case. Nwabali, meanwhile, brings far more experience from AFCON and World Cup qualifying, though he also left questions unanswered before his spell out of the squad.

The most costly absence is Victor Osimhen, sidelined by a muscle injury picked up at Galatasaray. The numbers explain why it stings: in the last World Cup qualifying campaign he scored eight of Nigeria's fifteen goals in just seven matches, more than 53% of the team's output. In the 22 games of his career in which he has scored for the national team, Nigeria has never lost: 17 wins, 5 draws and zero defeats. Without him on the field, though, the Eagles failed to win any of the five matches he missed in that same qualifying run. Now Chelle will have to spread that responsibility among Akor Adams, Tolu Arokodare, Taiwo Awoniyi, Ademola Lookman and others, with Adams carrying recent form after scoring against Gabon in the playoff semifinal.

Simon closing in on a century of caps

There's another story that could be written on Friday in Uyo. Moses Simon arrives with 99 appearances for Nigeria and, if he takes the field, will become just the fifth player to reach 100 caps, joining Ahmed Musa, Vincent Enyeama, Joseph Yobo and Alex Iwobi. The Nigeria Football Federation has already announced it will honor him.

Simon made his debut on March 25, 2015 and has scored 12 goals in his 99 appearances, with a record of 49 wins, 30 draws and 20 losses in the matches he has played. There's no guarantee he starts, but with the game at home, even a substitute appearance would be enough to complete the century.
