Patrick Vieira Named Senegal Coach After Pape Thiaw's Dismissal

Five minutes. That's all it took for Senegal's dream of reaching the world's top eight to fall apart. The team was up 2-0 against Belgium in the round of 16, with a spot in the quarterfinals all but secured, and everything collapsed in stoppage time. That collapse came at a steep price: it cost Pape Thiaw his job, and now, weeks later, the Senegalese federation already has a replacement lined up.

That replacement is Patrick Vieira, who was unveiled as the new head coach in a statement posted on Instagram. The federation gave no details on the length of his contract, which is fairly typical for these kinds of announcements, but it was clear that the 50-year-old Frenchman is taking on a challenge that looks nothing like what he experienced as a player.

Because as a player, Vieira won nearly everything there was to win. He was a World Cup champion with France and built a brilliant career at Inter Milan, AC Milan, Arsenal and Manchester City, always operating as one of those tone-setting midfielders every coach dreams of having.

A far more modest coaching resume

The trouble is that prestige never quite carried over into his coaching career. Vieira has managed New York City FC, then Nice, then Crystal Palace and also Strasbourg, without leaving a particularly strong mark at any of those clubs. His most recent stint came at Genoa, where he started off promisingly but was let go in under a year, with the team sitting at the bottom of Serie A.

Now he'll have to rebuild his reputation at the helm of a national team that's still reeling. The loss to Belgium wasn't the only rough patch for Senegal this cycle: the team also struggled more than expected in the group stage, with defeats to France and Norway that raised serious concerns before Senegal managed to advance.

Thiaw, 45, had taken over the job in 2024 and, despite the doubts surrounding him, led Senegal to a continental title in Morocco that later turned into a headache: the Confederation of African Football ended up stripping the team of that crown. The matter isn't fully settled yet, since Senegal's appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport is set to be heard on October 8. Less than two weeks after the World Cup exit, Thiaw and his coaching staff were dismissed, and that was the trigger that opened the door for Vieira's arrival.

It remains to be seen whether the Frenchman can find on the sidelines what has largely eluded him in his previous jobs. Senegal isn't just looking for immediate results, it wants to recover the stability it showed in other recent cycles, and to that end it turned to an internationally known name who is still searching for his breakthrough as a coach.
