Peñarol Unveils Anniversary Jersey Inspired by CURCC Origins

Some jerseys are launched to sell, and some are launched to remind everyone where it all began. The one Peñarol unveiled this Wednesday belongs to the second category. The club presented its anniversary kit through a video on its social media accounts, and the first thing that stands out is that it looks nothing like what carbonero fans are used to seeing.

Gone, at least for this occasion, are the classic vertical stripes that identify the team. In their place, the design offers something different: one black half and another half featuring black and gold stripes, though thinner than the traditional ones. It's an aesthetic nod that breaks from the usual look in order to glance back at the very origin of the institution.

A Tribute to 1891

This is no ordinary release. Peñarol turns 135 years old this year, and as usually happens every September, the month in which the club celebrates its anniversary, a special kit arrives to mark the occasion. This time the tribute goes straight to the roots: the design evokes the jersey worn in 1891, when the club wasn't yet called Peñarol but rather Central Uruguay Railway Cricket Club, known by its initials as CURCC.

That name, today little more than a curiosity for newer generations of fans, is in fact the club's birth certificate. So it makes sense that, to celebrate more than a century of history, the institution chose to look back at that starting point rather than simply update its regular uniform.

The tradition of releasing a special jersey every September has become a fixture on the carbonero calendar. Each year the club uses the date to revisit some chapter of its history, and this time it decided to go all the way back to the beginning, to the origins of the CURCC, to dress up its 135 years of life in a different way.
