Peñarol rout Canadian 11-0, one step from Clausura women's title

Eleven goals in a single match say a lot more than any standings table. That's exactly what Peñarol did this Sunday at Las Acacias, where they demolished Canadian 11-0 in matchday eight of Uruguay's women's Clausura Tournament, moving to within a single step of the title.

With that emphatic result, Las Carboneras climbed to 24 points and are closing in on the championship with plenty of room to spare. Right now, the only rival with mathematical chances of catching them is Montevideo City Torque, who also did their part this weekend, thrashing Danubio 3-1 to stay on 21 points, three behind the yellow and blacks.

Is that enough for Peñarol to relax with the title in sight? Not entirely, because in soccer nothing is signed until it's signed. But the cushion is clear and the schedule helps: on the final matchday of the Clausura, Peñarol will host San Jacinto Albion, while Montevideo City Torque will welcome Liverpool. If Las Carboneras pick up even a point here or there, the trophy stays in their hands.

A weekend loaded with goals across the board

Matchday eight wasn't just about Peñarol's rout. Nacional, the other powerhouse of Uruguayan women's soccer, also made a statement, running over San Jacinto Albion with a resounding 8-0. Defensor Sporting, meanwhile, beat Liverpool 3-1, and Juventud picked up three points with a 4-2 win over Wanderers.

That result from Nacional isn't a small detail looking ahead, because if Peñarol seals the Clausura, they'll have to face the Tricolores themselves in a final. The reason is simple: Nacional already won the Apertura, so the matchup between both clubs will decide who takes Phase 1 of the 2026 Uruguayan Championship.

And that's just the start of it. After that final comes Phase 2, with a Championship Series and an Honor Series played in a single round robin. Later, Phase 3 will be contested, with playoffs and a final between the Championship Series clubs. The Uruguayan championship isn't fully decided until the very end of that whole path, with a matchup between the Phase 1 champion (whoever emerges from the Apertura-Clausura final) and the Phase 3 champion.

For now, here's what's certain: Peñarol keep scoring, keep winning, and keep closing in. One matchday remains in the Clausura, and everything points to Las Carboneras wrapping up the phase with another title in hand.
