Philadelphia rallies with ten men to beat Chicago Fire 3-1 at Soldier Field

Philadelphia rallies with ten men to beat Chicago Fire 3-1 at Soldier Field

Chicago Fire went into halftime ahead on the scoreboard and down a man, then ended up losing 1-3 to Philadelphia Union at Soldier Field. Jack Elliott's red card just before the break split the match in two: everything good about the Fire's night happened in the first 45 minutes, and everything Philadelphia did came after.

The hosts had opened the scoring in the 43rd minute through Maren Haile-Selassie, who finished with his left foot from close range after an assist from Noah Allen. It looked like Chicago would head to the locker room with a deserved lead, but two minutes later, in stoppage time, Elliott picked up his second yellow card for dangerous play and left his team with ten men for the entire second half.

That moment changed everything. Philadelphia came out of the break with a different energy and needed just three minutes of the second half to equalize: Milan Iloski curled a right-footed finish into the top corner after a pass from Bruno Damiani. It was the start of a show from Damiani himself, who first made it 1-2 in the 54th minute with a left-footed strike from the center of the box set up by Cavan Sullivan, then extended the lead in the 66th minute with a shot from outside the box that left the Chicago goalkeeper no chance. With that brace, Damiani was the standout performer of the night for the visitors.

A numbers advantage that showed up everywhere

Playing with a man advantage for 45 minutes gave Philadelphia complete control of the match. The stats back it up: the visitors finished with 19 shots to Chicago's 8, 8 of them on target compared to just 4 for the home side, and a clear edge in big chances, 4 to 1. The corner count also favored the visitors, 7 to 2.

That dominance also shows up in the xG estimated from the match's shots: Philadelphia generated 2.704 expected goals compared to Chicago's 1.175. These are numbers calculated after the fact, not a prediction, but they capture pretty faithfully what played out on the field: a team that, despite the first-half scoreline, ended up in clear control once it had the extra man.

The Fire still had chances late, with substitutes Philip Zinckernagel and Puso Dithejane causing trouble after coming off the bench, but they couldn't find the goal that would have kept hopes of a draw alive. On the other side, Indiana Vassilev and Neil Pierre picked up yellow cards in the closing minutes, part of the natural wear of a match that dragged on for Chicago's ten men.

What the preview said and what actually happened

Before the match, our projection gave Chicago a 41% chance of winning, 25% for a draw and 34% for Philadelphia, with a fairly even expected-goals split (1.80 for the hosts and 1.63 for the visitors). The final result ended up being far more favorable to Philadelphia than we had anticipated, though Elliott's early red card helps explain why the match tilted so heavily in that direction during the second half.

With this result, Chicago Fire remain in fourth place in the East with 48 points from 29 games played, while Philadelphia Union sit sixth with 45 points from the same number of appearances, just three points behind their opponent from tonight. Both teams remain in the thick of a crowded midtable race where a result like this one can shift several places in the standings.
