Querétaro Beats Atlas 3-1 at Estadio Jalisco in Match Defined by Penalty and Red Card
Manuel Capasso's 51st minute red card and a VAR reviewed penalty shaped a match that Atlas had controlled in the first half.
VAR and a red card for Manuel Capasso changed the complexion of a match Atlas had well in hand. At Estadio Jalisco, Querétaro walked away with a 3-1 win that looks convincing on the scoreboard but was actually built around a penalty confirmed by video review and a second half in which the home side played down a man.
Atlas started the better of the two sides. With more possession and more dangerous buildup, the home team created the clearest chances of the first half: a Rodrigo Schlegel header that drifted just wide, an Aldo Rocha shot that was stopped right under the crossbar, and another attempt from Luís Esteves that missed the target. Everything shifted in the 34th minute, when the referee was called to the monitor and pointed to the spot for a Querétaro penalty after a foul by Rocha inside the box. Santiago Homenchenko made no mistake from twelve yards in the 38th minute, curling his shot into the top corner to make it 0-1.
Atlas answered almost immediately. Just three minutes later, in the 41st minute, Carlo García turned the ball into his own net off a rebound inside the area, leveling things at 1-1 heading into halftime, a scoreline that fairly represented what had happened on the field to that point.
The Red Card That Changed Everything
The second half opened evenly, with Atlas pushing down the flanks, but the game swung decisively in the 51st minute: Manuel Capasso was shown a straight red card for a foul on Daniel Parra, and from that point Querétaro took control with the extra man. With more room to work with, the visitors cashed in twice within ten minutes. In the 69th minute, Homenchenko scored his second goal of the night off an assist from Iker Benito, making it 1-2. Then in the 75th minute, Carlo García made up for his own goal by curling a shot into the top corner off a pass from Álex Alcalá, sealing the final 1-3.
Atlas pushed for a way back until the final whistle, turning to attacking substitutes Jorge Sánchez, Sergio Hernández and Jesús Serrato, and even managed a couple of dangerous shots late on, including one from Florián Monzón in stoppage time, but Querétaro's man advantage proved decisive in the end.
What the Numbers Say
| Stat | Atlas | Querétaro |
|---|---|---|
| Possession (%) | 58.6 | 41.4 |
| Shots | 14 | 12 |
| Shots on target | 3 | 5 |
| Corners | 6 | 2 |
| Passes | 507 | 360 |
| Fouls committed | 8 | 14 |
Atlas controlled the ball and created the better chances, but lacked sharpness in front of goal, putting just 3 of its 14 shots on target. Querétaro, on the other hand, was more efficient with less of the ball, a gap that also shows up in our xG estimate calculated from the match's shots: 0.875 for Atlas versus 1.532 for Querétaro, a sign that the visitors' chances carried more real threat despite being fewer in number.
The result also strays quite a bit from our pre-match projection, which gave Atlas a 42% chance of winning against 26% for Querétaro, with a draw at 32%. The pre-match expected goals figures (1.27 for Atlas and 0.94 for Querétaro) likewise gave no hint of the lopsided road win that ultimately unfolded.
In the Liga MX standings, Atlas came into the match in third place with 12 points, two ahead of Querétaro, which sat sixth with 10. The loss still leaves the Jalisco side with a comfortable cushion over the midtable, while Querétaro's win pulls it squarely into the fight for the middle of the table.
For Atlas, the takeaway is straightforward: the penalty, and especially Capasso's red card, derailed a match the team had been controlling up to that point. For Querétaro, Homenchenko's efficiency and the extra man in the second half made the difference between a narrow draw and a three-goal win.
