Rafa Nadal joins Real Madrid's board of directors
The tennis star, an honorary club member since 2017, accepted Florentino Pérez's invitation and now awaits ratification from the General Assembly on November 21.

A childhood photo says more than a thousand words. That was the card Rafa Nadal played to announce the most eye catching move of his new life away from the court: a picture of him as a boy, wearing a Real Madrid jersey, accompanied the message in which he confirmed he's joining the club's board of directors.
The announcement came on a Wednesday, without much fanfare, but it carried serious weight. Nadal, 40, is no newcomer to the Madridista cause: he has been an honorary club member since March 2017, and his ties to the institution run deep. What's new now is that he's moving from a symbolic seat in the stands to an actual seat at the table where decisions get made.
Nadal himself explained his decision on Instagram, with that same straightforward tone that always defined him on court:
I want to thank president Florentino Pérez and the Board for inviting me to join the Board of Directors of @realmadrid. I've accepted this invitation with great enthusiasm, eager to learn and to contribute everything I can.Rafa Nadal
The club didn't hold back in justifying the institutional signing. In a statement, Real Madrid called Nadal's arrival "an immense honor" and noted that he is "a figure of his sporting and human stature, a benchmark for Spanish and world sport" who now "contributes, from this role, to the present and future of our club."
A record that backs up the appointment
It's worth remembering where this figure comes from. Nadal retired from tennis in 2024, leaving behind a trophy case with 22 Grand Slam titles, including a record 14 French Opens, plus 36 Masters 1000 titles and two Olympic gold medals. Numbers that speak for themselves, and ones Real Madrid itself used to explain why his standing goes well beyond sport.
The club went further in its statement: "Nadal has had a legendary sporting career. However, his persona represents much more than his achievements: his talent, his constant pursuit of self improvement, his capacity for sacrifice, his competitiveness, his humility, his respect for rivals and teammates, and his solidarity make him an example on and off the court." It added that all these values "are part of Real Madrid's identity," something Nadal "has represented and upheld throughout his entire sporting life, becoming a role model for millions of people around the world."
Still, the appointment isn't fully official just yet. The club's General Assembly, scheduled for November 21, will need to formally ratify Nadal's incorporation as a new board member. Given the tone of the statement and the enthusiasm the tennis star has shown, that step looks more like a formality than a real obstacle.
