Real Madrid draws Arsenal in the 2026-27 Champions League league phase
Mourinho's side will have to get past the English club that eliminated them in the quarterfinals a year ago.
Some draws are forgotten within five minutes. Others leave a match circled in red marker. The one for the UEFA Champions League 2026-27 league phase falls into the second category: José Mourinho's Real Madrid will have to travel to the Emirates Stadium to take on Arsenal, one of the most talked about pairings to come out of the pots.
Before jumping to any dramatic conclusions, it's worth taking a step back. The current format hands each team eight matches against eight different opponents, folding all 36 clubs into a single table. Winning on the big nights is worth three points, sure, but picking up results against teams from the lower pots counts exactly the same in the final standings. That's why fixating on a single matchup from the draw is a bit misguided: you have to look at the full schedule.
Real Madrid's road ahead
Los Blancos will face Inter Milan, Arsenal, PSV Eindhoven, Roma, RB Leipzig, Shakhtar Donetsk, LASK and AEK Athens. Real Madrid will host Inter, PSV, Leipzig and LASK at the Santiago Bernabeu, while on the road they'll travel to London, Rome, Shakhtar's home base and Athens.
The trip to the Emirates stands out as the toughest test on the calendar. Arsenal's current form plays a part, but so does recent history: the Gunners knocked Real Madrid out in the 2025 quarterfinals with a resounding 3-0 win in London before sealing the tie with a 2-1 at the Bernabeu. The uncomfortable stat for Los Blancos is that they have never beaten the English club in this competition.
On the flip side, Mourinho's team will host the other heavyweight in their group, Inter, at home. That's no small detail: PSV and Leipzig both play attacking soccer that could give anyone trouble, but Real Madrid won't have to face them away from home. LASK, fresh out of the bottom pot, rounds out a run of four home fixtures at the Bernabeu where the logical target will be to sweep all three points each time. Roma, Shakhtar and AEK are demanding opponents more because of context than pedigree, and there Real Madrid should remain the favorite.
Mourinho, back at Stamford Bridge
There's a separate chapter with a nostalgic twist. Real Madrid won't play Chelsea, who aren't in Europe this season, but Shakhtar Donetsk will play their home fixture at Stamford Bridge because of the war in Ukraine. That means Mourinho will return to the stadium where he built part of his legend: he spent five years there, split between 2004-2007 and 2013-2015, and won eight trophies. For Chelsea fans, he remains a beloved figure despite his contentious exit in 2015.
The intrigue doesn't stop there. Mourinho will also cross paths again with Roma, the club he managed two seasons ago, and Yan Diomande will face Leipzig again, the team he left before joining Real Madrid.
Why Arsenal is smiling too
On the other side, Mikel Arteta's Arsenal, the reigning Premier League champions, got a schedule with similar perks. Their opponents will be Real Madrid, Bayern Munich, Borussia Dortmund, Real Betis, Lille, Napoli, Sabah and Slavia Prague. They'll host Real Madrid, Dortmund, Lille and Sabah at home, and travel to Bayern, Betis, Napoli and Slavia Prague.
Getting Real Madrid at home in London is a clear reward after what happened in 2025. The trip to Munich looms as their toughest away day, and they'll also face hostile atmospheres in Seville, Naples and Prague. But they avoided the trip to Baku: debutant Sabah will play at the Emirates, part of a run of home fixtures where Arsenal has plenty of arguments to pick up crucial points.
Neither Real Madrid nor Arsenal escaped tough tests, that much is clear. But the draw, rather than sparing them from strong opponents (nearly impossible with 36 teams in the mix), gave them something more valuable: less risk across the rest of their schedule to lock up a direct path to the round of 16.
The league phase kicks off between September 8 and 10, 2026, and wraps up its eighth and final matchday on January 27, 2027. The top eight teams in the table advance directly to the round of 16, while those finishing between ninth and twenty-fourth will play a knockout playoff round. The draw only set opponents and home or away status; the actual matchday schedule, with dates and kickoff times, will be revealed on Saturday, August 29.
