Real Salt Lake Strikes Early, Solans Brace Sinks New England Revolution 3-0

An early Hezarkhani goal and clinical finishing from Solans lifted Real Salt Lake past a Revolution side that controlled possession but couldn't cash in its chances.

Real Salt Lake Strikes Early, Solans Brace Sinks New England Revolution 3-0

It took all of 60 seconds for Aiden Hezarkhani to tear up the script. An angled strike from the right that curled into the top corner made it 1-0 almost before the fans at America First Field had settled into their seats. In the end, that early blow was the first sign of a night that finished 3-0 for Real Salt Lake over the New England Revolution, with Sergi Solans scoring twice in the second half.

What stands out is that the scoreline didn't reflect what happened on the field for much of the match. New England Revolution controlled the ball, holding 66.6% possession, and generated more attacking volume, but ran into Real Salt Lake's resistance again and again, along with its own lack of sharpness in the moments that mattered.

A Blistering Start and a Defense That Held

After Hezarkhani's goal, the Revolution responded and began piling on chances. Joshua Wynder came close in the 6th minute with a shot that grazed the post, and Sergi Solans answered on the other end with an effort that was blocked. The match moved at a frantic pace, with Carles Gil and Luca Langoni trying to thread passes between the lines, but shots from Daniel Gazdag, Langoni and others crashed into Real Salt Lake's goal or sailed wide. At halftime, the scoreboard still showed the home side's narrow lead, a result that didn't fully capture the story of the visitors' dominance.

The second half started much the same way: Ethan Kohler headed a shot off the post in the 50th minute, and the Revolution kept pressing insistently down the flanks. But the 61st minute brought the blow that truly turned the match: Noel Caliskan slipped a through ball and Sergi Solans finished with his right foot through the middle of the goal to make it 2-0. The Revolution never fully recovered, and in the 79th minute Solans struck again, this time with his left foot from close range off a Morgan Guilavogui assist, sealing his brace and the final 3-0.

The Numbers Tell a Different Story

The match stats reveal exactly that disconnect between control and result:

StatReal Salt LakeNew England Revolution
Possession (%)33.466.6
Shots916
Shots on target64
Big chances41
Corners111
Passes303584
Fouls committed814

New England Revolution had nearly double the shots and eleven corners to Real Salt Lake's one, but converted fewer of its shots on target than its rival. That's the key to the night: Real Salt Lake had fewer chances but finished them with remarkable efficiency. The estimated xG calculated after the fact, based on shot location, gives Real Salt Lake 2.365 against 1.407 for the Revolution, a figure that already tempers the possession narrative: the home side generated more real danger per shot than its rival despite holding the ball far less.

What the Preview Said and What Actually Happened

Before kickoff, our projection split the odds fairly evenly: a 35% chance of a home win, 27% for a draw and 38% for a visitor's win, with expected goals of 1.47 for Real Salt Lake and 1.55 for New England Revolution. What played out on the field strayed far from that balanced forecast: Real Salt Lake didn't just win, it did so by a three-goal margin, an outcome none of those pregame percentages had marked as the likeliest scenario.

In the East group standings, New England Revolution arrived in second place with 46 points from 27 games played, trailing Nashville SC for the top spot only on goal difference. A 3-0 road loss, with that many chances squandered, leaves a bittersweet feeling for a team that controlled the ball but couldn't turn it into goals. For Real Salt Lake, on the other hand, the night came down to Sergi Solans' finishing touch and an early strike from Hezarkhani that proved decisive from the first minute.
