Riestra and Unión Santa Fe Share the Points in a 1-1 Draw in Group A

Randazzo put Deportivo Riestra ahead with a header, and Rubio leveled it minutes later for Unión Santa Fe, in a match where the home side was more clinical despite seeing less of the ball.

Riestra and Unión Santa Fe Share the Points in a 1-1 Draw in Group A

The second half was only four minutes old when the Guillermo Laza erupted: Juan Randazzo headed home a Mariano Bracamonte corner delivery to make it 1-0 for Deportivo Riestra. The home side's joy didn't last long. Seven minutes later, Tobías Rubio equalized from close range, also with a header, off a cross from Lucas Ayala, and the score stayed that way the rest of the way. The match, part of Argentina's Primera División, ended 1-1.

The first half had been back and forth without goals, with Unión Santa Fe controlling more of the ball while Deportivo Riestra waited patiently and stayed organized. There were warning signs from both sides: Marcelo Estigarribia tested the keeper with a header, and Mateo Peresutti rattled the crossbar with a shot from outside the box off a free kick in the 34th minute, the clearest chance of the opening half. Even so, the teams went into the locker room level at 0-0.

The second half flipped the script right away. Moments after the restart, Deportivo Riestra had back to back shots from Alexander Díaz and Braian Sánchez saved, and from the resulting corner came Randazzo's header that opened the scoring in the 49th minute. The forward needed treatment for an injury just minutes after his goal, though he stayed on the field until he was replaced by Carlos Quintana in the 57th minute, by which point the equalizer had already arrived. Because Unión Santa Fe wasted no time responding: in the 56th minute, Rubio arrived at the far post to head in Ayala's cross and tie the game back up.

More Possession for Unión, More Punch for Riestra

The numbers tell a story of contrasts. Unión Santa Fe clearly dominated the ball, with 65.2% possession to Deportivo Riestra's 34.8%, and also outdid the home side in shots on target and corners. Even so, it was Deportivo Riestra that generated more danger with less of the ball: our expected goals estimate for the match gives the home side 1.625 against 0.75 for the visitors, a gap that confirms the home team made the most of what little it had.

Heading into the match, our projection gave Deportivo Riestra a 31% chance of winning, Unión Santa Fe 33%, and a draw 36%, with a total expected goals figure of 1.83. The final result, with one goal for each side, landed pretty close to that balanced split we forecast, and the draw ended up being, in fact, the single most likely outcome according to those numbers.

What the Draw Means in the Standings

In Group A, Unión Santa Fe came into the match with a record of 4 wins, 2 draws and 7 losses in 13 outings, while Deportivo Riestra had 2 wins, 6 draws and 5 losses, also in 13 games. The draw leaves the two sides separated by just 2 points in the table, a razor-thin margin that reflects just how even the matchup was between two teams fighting in the same part of the standings.

With yellow cards for Estigarribia and Sansotre, and several late substitutions that weren't enough to break the deadlock, the match ended with a point apiece. Deportivo Riestra might have walked away with all three points had it not been for Unión Santa Fe's almost immediate response, once again showing that even without winning, it knows how to bounce back quickly when a match turns against it.
