Santos Laguna Stuns Philadelphia Union With Lightning-Fast Second-Half Double
Ramiro Sordo and Ezequiel Bullaude scored three minutes apart to seal the road win at Subaru Park.

Santos Laguna came away with a convincing 0-2 win on the road at Subaru Park, where a lightning-fast double to open the second half was all it needed to get past Philadelphia Union. The Mexican side took over the decisive minutes of a match that had been tight and scoreless through the first 45 minutes.
A tight first half broken open in three minutes
The first half went back and forth for both sides but lacked clear-cut chances. Ezekiel Alladoh tried twice from outside the box for Philadelphia Union, while Ramiro Sordo and Fran Villalba had looks for Santos Laguna. There were also yellow cards for Salvador Mariscal and Kevin Picon for dangerous play, in a stretch bogged down by fouls. The score stayed 0-0 at the break, with Quinn Sullivan missing the clearest chance of the closing stages of the first half when he sent his shot well over the bar.
Everything changed as soon as the second half kicked off. In the 47th minute, Ramiro Sordo popped up to head home from close range off an assist from Ezequiel Bullaude, making it 0-1. The blow proved fatal because just three minutes later, in the 50th, Bullaude himself returned the favor: he finished with his right foot from close range, into the top corner, off a cross from Mauricio Cuevas, for the 0-2 that put the result out of reach.
Philadelphia Union tried to respond with attacking substitutions, including the introductions of Alejandro Bedoya and Malik Jakupovic, but the home side's answer kept running into the visitors' resistance. Kellan LeBlanc tested the box and Ezekiel Alladoh had a header, but neither found the net, while Santos Laguna managed the lead patiently until the final whistle, even finding time in a physical closing stretch for more cautions, including ones shown to Finn Sundstrom, Franco Pardo and Japhet Sery Larsen.
By the numbers
The stats show a match more even than the final score suggests. Philadelphia Union had more possession and generated more shots, but Santos Laguna was more clinical in the moments that mattered.
| Stat | Philadelphia Union | Santos Laguna |
|---|---|---|
| Possession (%) | 50.9 | 49.1 |
| Shots | 12 | 6 |
| Shots on target | 4 | 3 |
| Big chances | 2 | 2 |
| Corners | 6 | 6 |
| Passes | 403 | 394 |
| Fouls committed | 13 | 13 |
The xG figure (expected goals, an in-house estimate calculated from the match's shots) backs up that sense of parity as well: Santos Laguna generated 1.214 against Philadelphia Union's 1.095, a razor-thin gap that stands in contrast to the two-goal margin on the final scoreboard.
A result that defied the projections
Our preview pointed in the opposite direction: Philadelphia Union was given a 61% chance of winning, against just 16% for Santos Laguna, with a draw estimated at 23%. The pre-match expected goals figures even projected a home win by a margin of 2.06 to 1 in terms of offensive expectation. What played out on the field was exactly the opposite: the team given less of a chance on paper won with authority thanks to its efficiency in one key stretch of the second half.
What the result means
For Philadelphia Union, the loss leaves the club with just 3 points from 3 matches played, the product of one win and two losses, in the group where it shares the table with Santos Laguna. For the Mexican side, the win confirms that clinical finishing at the right moments can outweigh possession or shot volume. The double in just three minutes, scored by Sordo and Bullaude off assists from one another, ended up being the difference in a match that, based on the underlying numbers, could have been far more even.
