Sporting CP blows 2-0 lead after Debast red card, held to draw by Arouca

Sporting CP raced to a 2-0 lead in just 16 minutes against Arouca at the Estadio Jose Alvalade and looked to have the match under control. It ended 2-2, with the hosts down to ten men from the second half and a nerve-wracking finish decided in stoppage time.

The start could not have gone better for the home side. In the 2nd minute, off a corner kick, Goncalo Inacio headed home from close range off an assist from Maxi Araujo to make it 1-0. Fourteen minutes later, Luis Suarez finished with his right foot inside the box, set up by Ivan Fresneda, for the 2-0. Sporting was dominating, creating chances, and everything pointed to a comfortable result.

But the match changed completely in the 53rd minute, when Zeno Debast was sent off for a foul on Gabriel Rukavina. Down to ten men, Sporting began to wear down, and Arouca, with Barbero as its main threat, grew into the game.

The equalizer took shape in the closing stretch. In the 76th minute came a penalty on Barbero inside the box, confirmed by VAR after a review at the 77th. Jose Fontan converted it with his left foot in the 80th minute to make it 2-1. The equalizer arrived just six minutes later: Dylan Nandin finished from close range in the 86th minute to seal the final 2-2, which held despite seven minutes of stoppage time played afterward.
