Sporting CP flexes its muscle in rout of Nacional: penalty conversion and early second-half strike seal Liga Portugal win

The home side controlled play with 67.4% possession and 19 shots, a level of dominance that could easily have produced a much wider scoreline.

Sporting CP flexes its muscle in rout of Nacional: penalty conversion and early second-half strike seal Liga Portugal win

Sporting CP settled matters with a penalty and an early second-half goal, finishing the job comfortably on the scoreboard even if the stat sheet suggested it could have been far more one-sided: 2-0 over CD Nacional at Estadio Jose Alvalade in Liga Portugal action. With 19 shots to Nacional's 3 and 67.4% possession, the final score barely did justice to what the home side produced.

The first half was a green and white monologue that took its time to pay off. Rodrigo Zalazar tested the keeper twice from outside the box, Issa Doumbia sent one over the crossbar, and both Geny Catamo and Maxi Araujo forced saves from the visiting goalkeeper. Nacional, meanwhile, barely showed up going forward, with its first shot of any real danger not arriving until the closing stages of the first half, courtesy of Miguel Baeza. When the opener finally came, it wasn't from open play but from a foul inside the box: in the 30th minute, Leo Santos brought down Maxi Araujo and the referee pointed to the spot. A minute later, Luis Suarez stepped up and buried it with a low, angled finish to the keeper's right, making it 1-0.

Sporting went into the break ahead on the scoreboard and ahead in just about every other department, and it wasted no time picking up where it left off after the restart. Just two minutes into the second half, in the 48th minute, Flavio Goncalves finished with his right foot from the center of the box off an assist from Suarez himself, making it 2-0. The goal arrived barely two minutes after play resumed, right when Nacional might have hoped to find a foothold coming out of the locker room.

From there, the match essentially ran itself. Sporting kept creating chances, with Ivan Fresneda, Fotis Ioannidis and Nestory Irankunda all getting looks after the substitutions rolled in, but the team couldn't add to the tally. Nacional's only real spark was a shot from Deivison that sailed wide. Yellow cards for Maxi Araujo, Sergi Altimira and Markus Jensen provided the only hint of tension in a contest that was never in doubt.

The numbers behind the dominance

Sporting's superiority showed up in every line of the stat sheet.

The estimated xG based on the shots taken in the match tells the same story: 3.312 for Sporting against just 0.101 for Nacional. It's a post-match reading rather than a prediction, but it confirms that the 2-0 scoreline could have been a good deal wider had the home side's finishing matched its buildup play.

Pre-match projections had pointed to a Sporting-dominated affair, with an 80% chance of a home win, a 14% chance of a draw and just a 6% chance of a Nacional victory, along with expected goals of 2.77 for the home side against 0.68 for the visitors. The final result lined up fairly well with that forecast: Sporting won with room to spare, though it scored two goals rather than the nearly three the model had projected going in.

What it means in the standings

With the win, Sporting CP moves to 13 points from five matches played, with four wins and a draw, opening up a 9-point gap over Nacional in the table. Nacional, for its part, sits on 4 points after one win, one draw and three losses in five outings. It was a stress-free evening for Sporting, which did exactly what was expected of it: control the match from start to finish against an opponent that never found a way to hurt it.
