Sporting CP storm back to overpower Galatasaray in Champions League opener

The Portuguese side climbed to third place in the league phase after coming back from a 0-1 deficit with goals from Catamo, Suarez and Zalazar.

Sporting CP storm back to overpower Galatasaray in Champions League opener

It started poorly for Sporting CP and finished as a clear statement win for the home side. In just four minutes, an own goal from Goncalo Inacio put Galatasaray ahead at the Estadio Jose Alvalade, but the match ended 3-1 in favor of the Portuguese club, who stormed back in the second half and secured their spot near the top of the Champions League league phase.

The first half was an open, back and forth affair with more Turkish chances than Portuguese ones despite the early misfortune. Galatasaray went ahead in the 4th minute after a scramble in the box that ended up in Inacio's own net, and for several minutes the visitors seemed to control the tempo, with Roland Sallai and Gabriel Sara causing problems. But Sporting found the equalizer in the 26th minute, when Geny Catamo finished with his left foot from the center of the box to make it 1-1, the score at halftime.

The second half belonged entirely to Sporting

The complexion of the game changed completely after the break. Just three minutes in, in the 53rd minute, Ismail Jakobs brought down Luis Suarez inside the box for a penalty, and the Uruguayan made no mistake from the spot in the 56th minute to make it 2-1. Six minutes later, in the 62nd minute, Rodrigo Zalazar extended the lead with a stunning direct free kick, curled with his right foot into the top left corner, to make it a final 3-1. Between those goals, Galatasaray had answers through Baris Alper Yilmaz and Gabriel Sara, but couldn't find a way back into the match.

Substitutions on both benches, including the introductions of Rafael Leao, Ilkay Gundogan and Fotis Ioannidis, didn't change the flow of the closing stretch, which wound down with a handful of fouls and little real danger at either end.

The numbers behind the match

The stats tell an interesting story: Galatasaray had more of the ball and created more chances, but Sporting was sharper when it counted.

Galatasaray controlled possession with more than 60 percent of the ball and generated more corners and total shots, but Sporting was far more clinical with the chances that came its way: five of its eight shots found the target, compared with just three of Galatasaray's ten. That efficiency also shows up in the post match expected goals: 1.51 for Sporting versus 2.08 for Galatasaray, a figure that confirms the visitors built up more accumulated danger, even though it was the home side that converted at the right moments.

Our preview had tabbed Sporting as the clear favorite, giving them a 61 percent chance of winning, with a 21 percent chance of a draw and just 18 percent for Galatasaray, with expected goals of 2.31 for the home side and 1.19 for the visitors. The final result matched that projection in terms of the winner, though the path there was rockier than expected, with Sporting having to come from behind before pulling away.

What it means in the standings

With this result, Sporting CP moves into 3rd place in the league phase, with 3 points, 1 match played, 1 win and a goal difference of plus 2. Galatasaray, meanwhile, sits in 32nd place, without points after the loss and with a goal difference of minus 2. The gap between the two sides in the table stands at 3 points, a direct reflection of what unfolded at Alvalade: an early stumble that the Turkish side couldn't turn into anything more, and a Portuguese response that proved decisive in just 36 minutes of second half soccer.
