Sporting Kansas City breaks transfer record to sign Brazilian forward Andre Luiz from Olympiacos

Sporting Kansas City broke its own bank. The MLS club confirmed the signing of Brazilian forward Andre Luiz from Greek side Olympiacos, in what the franchise described as the most expensive transfer in its history. The exact fee was not made public, but the precedent said plenty on its own: until now, the record belonged to Mexican striker Alan Pulido, for whom Sporting KC paid $7,500,000 to Chivas de Guadalajara.

Andre Luiz signed as a designated player on a five-year contract. The deal is still pending a standard procedure for this type of transaction, namely securing his visa and international transfer certificate, so the exact date of his debut remains up in the air.

So who is the player who just became the club's most expensive bet? He's 24 years old and coming off a year that changed the course of his career. He started at Rio Ave in Portugal, where he put up seven goals and six assists, numbers that caught the eye of half of Europe. Last January he made the jump to Olympiacos for the rest of the season, helping the Greek club finish second in its league, no small feat in a competition where Olympiacos usually battles Panathinaikos and PAOK head to head for the title.

His story began far from all that: he was born in Rio de Janeiro and took his first steps at that city's America Football Club. He then moved through the youth ranks at Flamengo, a club with which he went on to make his first-team debut. From there he went on loan to Estrela da Amadora in Portugal for the 2023-2024 season, and in January 2025 Rio Ave signed him permanently before his lightning-fast move to Greek football.

The club's front office didn't hide its excitement. David Lee, Sporting KC's president of soccer operations, put it this way:

Andre Luiz's arrival is not an isolated move. Sporting KC is undergoing a thorough rebuild under new principal owner Peter Mallouk, with a revamped front office working alongside coach Raphael Wicky, who is in his first season at the helm. Along the way there were also attempts that didn't pan out, including a failed negotiation for Egyptian star Mohamed Salah.

The team's on-field situation explains the urgency to reinforce the roster: Sporting KC currently sits with a record of 4 wins, 2 draws and 13 losses, last in the Western Conference. Given those numbers, it's no surprise that the front office decided to make a bold move for a young forward in the prime of his career, hoping to turn the season around.
