Barcelona mural unites Lamine Yamal and Mbappé with a kiss and a golden ball before El Clásico

A passionate kiss, a golden ball at their feet, and two jerseys that rarely cross paths except to fight over a trophy. That's what showed up overnight on Carrer d'En Cortines in Barcelona, the work of street artist TvBoy, and naturally, social media has gone wild over the image.

The mural shows Lamine Yamal and Kylian Mbappé kissing, each wearing his own team's jersey, while a ball painted gold rests beneath them. It's no coincidence or whim: the painting arrives just two days before El Clásico, which Barcelona and Real Madrid will play on Sunday at Camp Nou, and the golden ball is a direct nod to the 2026 Ballon d'Or, which will be awarded in London on Monday, October 26, an award both players are chasing.

The piece has already racked up thousands of likes on social media, and it has a curious precedent: TvBoy himself painted a very similar mural back in 2017, though with different stars locked in their own eternal rivalry: Leo Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo. Now the changing of the guard looks confirmed with this new pair of rivals.

A face-off with plenty on the line

What's curious is that Yamal and Mbappé are set to cross paths twice in less than 24 hours. First on the pitch, Sunday at Spotify Camp Nou, in the season's first Clásico and the biggest showcase LaLiga EA Sports has to offer. Then in London, sharing the stage at the Ballon d'Or ceremony, where both dream of lifting the trophy for the first time.

The deadline for the hundred journalists on the international jury to cast their votes closed on September 28, so nothing that happens at Camp Nou will change a single ballot. But neither player wants to show up in London without having left his mark on Spanish soccer's biggest stage, the match that truly shows who's on top right now.

And the numbers back both of them equally. Lamine Yamal arrives with 10 goals and 10 assists in 12 games for Barça, an impressive tally for a player his age. Mbappé, for his part, isn't far behind: 12 goals and 3 assists in those same 12 matches for Real Madrid. Both are in red hot form, and both know that succeeding Ousmane Dembélé as the best player on the planet means making a statement at Camp Nou.

So the mural, with its kiss and its golden ball, is really just a preview of what's coming: a head to head clash between two of the names most talked about for the Ballon d'Or, right before the season heads into its most decisive stretch.
