Union Berlin grinds it out: Burcu strikes in the 80th to edge Elversberg 1-0
Despite dominating with 19 shots to the visitors' 7, Mauro Lustrinelli's side had to wait until the 80th minute to break through against Elversberg in the Bundesliga.

Union Berlin needed a win badly, and they found it at just the right moment: a right-footed strike from Livan Burcu in the 80th minute, sneaking in low by the left post off a corner kick, gave Mauro Lustrinelli's side a 1-0 victory over SV 07 Elversberg at the Stadion An der Alten Försterei in the Bundesliga.
The number that sums up the match best is this: Union had nearly three times as many shots as their opponents, 19 to 7, and considerably less of the ball, 42.9 percent possession to 57.1 percent. It was a game of dominance without goals for long stretches, with Elversberg controlling possession but never translating it into real danger, and the hosts knocking on the door again and again without Felix Keidel's goal giving way.
A first half of wasted chances
The warning signs were there from the start. As early as the 1st minute, Felix Uduokhai headed a Woo-yeong Jeong cross wide. Tim Skarke tried twice, in the 9th and 14th minutes, without luck. Andras Schafer fired a shot that the visiting goalkeeper tipped onto the crossbar in the 25th minute, and four minutes later Uduokhai went for another header, this time straight at the keeper. Elversberg answered with the only real scare of the first half: a header from Maximilian Rohr that crashed off the crossbar in the 34th minute. The first half ended scoreless, 0-0, with a clear sense that Union deserved more than the scoreboard showed.
The second half followed the same script. Woo-yeong Jeong created danger twice in the 55th minute, with two shots blocked on the same play, and Tom Rothe tried with his head and then his foot on the resulting corner without finding the net. Elversberg got their best chance through substitute Maurice Krattenmacher, who hit the left post in the 69th minute.
Burcu breaks the deadlock
The goal arrived by the route that had been threatening all match: a corner kick. In the 80th minute, off the corner, Livan Burcu, who had come on from the bench in the second half, struck a right-footed shot from outside the box that slipped in low by the left post. Elversberg tried to respond through Cole Campbell, who tested the keeper with his left foot a minute later, but the home goalkeeper held firm and the 1-0 scoreline stood.
| Stat | Union Berlin | Elversberg |
|---|---|---|
| Possession (%) | 42.9 | 57.1 |
| Shots | 19 | 7 |
| Shots on target | 7 | 2 |
| Corners | 7 | 3 |
| Passes | 325 | 450 |
| Fouls committed | 14 | 9 |
The xG numbers generated in the match, calculated after the fact based on shot locations, confirm that sense of sterile dominance for most of the game: 1.249 for Union Berlin against just 0.305 for Elversberg. The hosts created far more danger, though it took them nearly the whole match to turn it into a goal.
The result also runs counter to our pre-match projections: we had given Elversberg a 40 percent chance of winning, against 34 percent for Union Berlin and 26 percent for a draw, with expected goals of 1.64 for the visitors and 1.50 for the hosts. What happened was the opposite of the favorite's script: the team with the lower odds in our model took the three points, and kept a clean sheet to boot.
In the standings, the win moves Union Berlin to 4 points in 16th place, while Elversberg sit on 7 points in eighth, just 3 points above today's rival. For a team that came into the match with a goal difference of minus 12 so far this season, the victory matters as much for the points as for the sign that, at least this Sunday, the performance matched the result.
