Union Berlin Holds Off Leaders Dortmund in Scoreless Draw at the Alte Försterei

Despite controlling possession and creating more chances, Borussia Dortmund couldn't break down a Union Berlin side that dug in defensively and grabbed a valuable point in its fight to climb out of the relegation zone.

Union Berlin Holds Off Leaders Dortmund in Scoreless Draw at the Alte Försterei

Union Berlin couldn't climb out of the bottom of the table, and Borussia Dortmund couldn't find a way to take all three points from the Stadion An der Alten Försterei. The final score was 0-0, a result that leaves more questions than answers for both sides, though for very different reasons.

The match opened with intensity and early cards: within the first few seconds, Ethan Nwaneri had already been booked for a dangerous challenge, and before the 15th minute Waldemar Anton and Serhou Guirassy had also picked up yellows. With fouls piling up at that pace, the game never quite found its rhythm, though that didn't stop both ends from producing scoring chances.

Dortmund came closest to breaking the deadlock. Maximilian Beier tried twice from the left flank without luck, and in the second half Ethan Nwaneri forced a strong save from the home goalkeeper with a left-footed effort from the center of the box that was stopped low to the ground. Guirassy, for his part, had as many as three attempts late on, a header and two right-footed efforts from inside the area, but couldn't find the net. One of his shots even clipped the left post before being cleared.

Union Berlin, far from settling for a defensive posture, also had its moments. Tim Skarke tested the keeper twice from outside the box, one effort grazing the right post off a counterattack, and in the closing minutes Felix Uduokhai and Rani Khedira both went up for headers off corner kicks without finding the target. The final stretch, with both benches making changes in search of a breakthrough that never came, had more heart than precision.

What the numbers say

Possession made clear who dictated the tempo: Dortmund controlled the ball at 62.6 percent to Union Berlin's 37.4 percent, a gap that also showed up in total passes, 570 to 340. Still, that control didn't translate into accuracy. The visitors managed just 2 shots on target out of 12 total attempts, while the home side, despite generating 11 shots of its own, registered none on target according to the official data.

The expected goals figures calculated from the match's shots were close as well, despite the territorial dominance: 1.015 for Union Berlin and 1.319 for Dortmund, a razor thin difference that confirms that even with less of the ball, the hosts created real danger in the opposing box.

That outcome contrasts with what we projected before kickoff. In our preview, we gave Dortmund a 62 percent chance of winning, against 16 percent for Union Berlin and 22 percent for a draw, with expected goals of 2.18 for the visitors and 1.06 for the home side. Reality turned out far tighter than anticipated: Dortmund never imposed the gap expected of it, and the match fell well short of the projected total of roughly 3.24 goals.

What the result means in the standings

In the Bundesliga table, Dortmund remains in first place with 14 points from 6 matches, while Union Berlin sits in 16th with just 5 points from the same number of games. The gap between the two stands at 9 points, a margin this draw doesn't change much: Dortmund adds to its total but fails to stretch its lead the way it would have hoped, and Union Berlin scratches out a point that, given the level shown against the league leaders, could prove valuable in its fight to climb out of the bottom of the table.
