Union Santa Fe Rout Sarmiento 4-1 as Tarragona and Malcorra Lead Offensive Show
The home side broke through in the first half and was far more clinical despite seeing less of the ball.

Cristian Tarragona struck twice as Union Santa Fe ran roughshod over Sarmiento, winning 4-1 at Estadio 15 de Abril in an offensive showcase that broke open just past the quarter hour mark and never let up until the final whistle.
The opener came in the 17th minute: Tarragona took a pass from Emilio Giaccone and fired a right-footed shot from outside the box that snuck in right along the left post. Sarmiento pushed back with some insistence, a shot from Jonathan Herrera and another from Julian Contrera that both went without reward, and even clanged one off the crossbar through Ignacio Malcorra, who was still wearing the Union jersey but had come on for Mauro Luna Diale a few minutes earlier due to injury. The first half ended with that slim lead, though with more back and forth than the scoreline would suggest.
The second half was a different story. In the 60th minute, after a well-executed counterattack, Tarragona popped up again to grab his second with a low shot from the center of the box, once more assisted by Malcorra. Thirteen minutes later, Malcorra himself joined the scoring party, finishing left-footed from inside the box off a corner delivered by Lucas Ayala to make it 3-0. Sarmiento pulled one back in the 78th minute with a stunning strike from Julian Mavilla into the top corner, a shot that for a moment seemed to inject some tension into the match, but the visitors' hopes were short-lived: in the 83rd minute, substitute Eric Ramirez, who had just entered the game, slotted home low to seal the final 4-1.
The Numbers Behind the Rout
What's curious is that the scoreline didn't reflect a lopsided performance on the field. Sarmiento had more possession, more corners and even more shots on target, but Union Santa Fe was far more clinical when it mattered.
| Stat | Union Santa Fe | Sarmiento |
|---|---|---|
| Possession (%) | 48.9 | 51.1 |
| Shots | 12 | 11 |
| Shots on target | 5 | 6 |
| Big chances | 1 | 1 |
| Corners | 2 | 4 |
| Fouls committed | 11 | 11 |
Our expected goals estimate based on the match's shots gives Union Santa Fe an xG of 1.312 against Sarmiento's 0.734, a gap considerably smaller than what the final score suggested. Put another way, the home side converted its chances with remarkable efficiency, while Sarmiento generated plenty of play without turning it into goals, save for Mavilla's strike.
The preview had pointed to an evenly matched game, though with Union Santa Fe as the favorite: 49% odds of a home win, 29% for a draw and 22% for Sarmiento, with expected goals of 1.51 for the home side and 0.94 for the visitors out of a total of 2.44. The final result far exceeded that forecast in terms of goals, though it did back up the outcome the model had tagged as most likely. The win comes in Group A of the tournament, where Union Santa Fe holds sixth place with 10 points through seven matches played (three wins, one draw and three losses). Sarmiento, meanwhile, leaves 15 de Abril with a defeat that stings, despite the brief flicker of hope provided by Mavilla's second-half goal.
With Tarragona and Malcorra driving the attack and Ramirez adding to it off the bench, Union Santa Fe leaves a commanding impression on the scoreboard, even if the run of play was closer than the 4-1 final suggests.
