Lazio overwhelms ten-man Monza to edge into the Serie A summit
Goals from Tavares, Isaksen and Pinamonti seal Lazio's win over a Monza side that, down to ten men from the 34th minute, came within a goal despite Lucchesi's red card.

With barely two minutes on the clock, Nuno Tavares had already gotten the scoreboard moving. A left-footed strike from outside the box, set up by Tijjani Noslin, found the center of the goal and left Monza reeling almost before the match had begun. In the end, Lazio beat Monza 3-1 at the Stadio Olimpico in a Serie A clash that was decided inside the first half hour, one the visitors, down a man for more than an hour, were never fully able to turn around.
The second blow came in the 22nd minute: Gustav Isaksen finished with his left foot from the right side of the box, again set up by Noslin, to make it 2-0. The match looked all but settled, but at the 34 mark things got complicated for Monza from a different angle: Lorenzo Lucchesi was shown a red card. Down to ten men and trailing on the scoreboard, Ivan Juric's side nonetheless found an immediate response before the break. In first-half stoppage time, Saba Goglichidze headed home from close range, after a corner kick cross from Dany Mota, to make it 2-1 at the interval.
The second half was a more even contest than the final score suggests. Monza, even with a man down, generated danger at times with Dany Mota a constant threat in the box, with several shots either saved by the goalkeeper or blocked by the defense. Lazio, for its part, managed the ball (controlling possession at 65.5% to Monza's 34.5%) without finding a third goal until deep into the closing stretch. Isaksen also struck the post in the 85th minute, which could have sealed it earlier. Finally, in the 87th minute, Andrea Pinamonti, on from the bench, finished with his right foot from the center of the box after a counterattack started by Alfonso Pedraza, to close out the 3-1 final.

As for expected goals estimated from the shots taken in the match, Lazio generated 2.008 against Monza's 1.346, a gap that doesn't fully reflect the wide margin on the scoreboard but does confirm that the visitors carried real attacking threat despite playing most of the match with ten men.
Pre-match projections had given Lazio a 56% chance of victory, against 27% for a draw and 17% for a Monza win, with expected goals of 1.67 for the home side and 0.82 for the visitors. The final result ended up more lopsided than projected in Lazio's favor, though Monza managed to score above expectations despite playing a man down from the first half onward.
What the result means
With this win, Lazio moves to 16 points from 6 matches played, with a record of 5 wins and 1 draw, sharing the top of the table with Internazionale though behind on goal difference. Monza, meanwhile, remains stuck near the bottom of the standings with 4 points from 6 matches (1 win, 1 draw and 4 losses), 12 points adrift of their opponent on the day. Lucchesi's red card shaped the course of a match that, despite the resistance shown while playing a man short, ultimately swung toward Lazio's sharpness in the decisive moments.
