Latvia and Cyprus Play to Scoreless Draw as Visitors Dominate Without Finishing Touch

Cyprus controlled the game with 67 percent possession and 18 shots, but couldn't break through against Latvia in the Nations League, a result that leaves both sides with a single point in Group C2.

Latvia and Cyprus Play to Scoreless Draw as Visitors Dominate Without Finishing Touch

Neither Ioannis Pittas in the second minute, with a low shot straight at the goalkeeper's hands, nor Marcus Edwards afterward with a string of attempts from outside the box, could break the 0-0 deadlock between Latvia and Cyprus at Skonto Stadions. The result leaves both teams with the same uneasy feeling: plenty of territory for Cyprus, not enough sharpness, and a point that tastes like too little for either side in the UEFA Nations League.

The match followed a clear script from the opening whistle: Cyprus pushed forward, Latvia held its ground. As early as the second minute came the first warning from Pittas, and just two minutes later Edwards tried his luck from the center of the box off a pass from Pittas himself. Latvia, meanwhile, barely showed up going forward, with its first dangerous shot arriving only in the 20th minute, a Vladislavs Gutkovskis effort that was blocked.

The visitors' dominance translated into corners and crosses into the box that found no reliable finisher. Konstantinos Sotiriou tried a header in the 16th minute, Giorgos Malekkides had a go a minute later, and again in the 41st. Grigoris Kastanos also had his chance before the break, firing from outside the area but sending it over the bar. Nothing went in. Latvia headed to the locker room with Vladislavs Gutkovskis already booked for a handball in the 13th minute, but without having conceded the goal their opponents kept threatening.

A Second Half With the Same Script

The second half didn't change the story much. Cyprus kept setting the tone: Edwards tested the keeper again in the 50th minute and once more in the 59th, and in the 72nd minute he unleashed a long-range effort that the Latvian goalkeeper pushed away next to the post. Ioannis Kosti also had his moment in the 71st minute with a low shot that was saved. Latvia, for its part, found a bit more life after the substitutions: Roberts Uldrikis had two attempts around the 79th and 80th minutes, and Deniss Melniks headed a free kick cross over the bar in the 86th minute.

The match heated up in the second half, with yellow cards handed out to both sides: Ioannis Kosti, Nick Tsaroulla, Konstantinos Sotiriou, Antonijs Cernomordijs and Ioannis Pittas were all booked at different points in the second half, a reflection of a tightly contested game that couldn't find a way to break open. Not even the substitutions (Marinos Tzionis, Hector Kyprianou, Eduards Daskevics, Markuss Strods, Kostas Pileas and Andronikos Kakoullis all came on) produced the goal that would have settled the tie.

The Numbers Confirm the Story

The match statistics make clear who carried the weight of the game:

StatisticLatviaCyprus
Possession (%)3367

Shots on target-5
Big chances-2
Corners411
Passes264530
Fouls committed1612

According to our own xG estimate calculated from the match's shots, Cyprus generated 1.583 expected goals against Latvia's 0.635, a gap that backs up the visitors' dominance but also explains their frustration: with that many chances created, the scoreline should have moved at least once.

What the Result Means for the Group

The draw leaves Latvia and Cyprus level on 1 point in Group C2, both with a draw and a loss from two matches played, though the goal difference slightly favors Cyprus (-1 compared to Latvia's -2). Montenegro leads the group with 6 points after two wins, while Armenia has 3. Neither Latvia nor Cyprus got the result they needed to close the gap on the group leaders, and this scoreless split of the points at Skonto Stadions leaves both sides with work still to do in the upcoming matchdays.
