Lithuania and Azerbaijan Draw 1-1 in Even Nations League Clash
A Kucys penalty and an Emreli finish inside the first thirteen minutes set the score, which Lithuania managed to hold on to and stay atop Group D2.

Just eight minutes had gone by at the S. Darius and S. Gireno Stadium when Armandas Kucys converted a penalty to make it 1-0 for Lithuania, curling a right-footed shot into the top left corner that gave the Azerbaijan goalkeeper no chance. Five minutes later, Mahir Emreli settled his side with a low finish from the center of the box, set up by Tellur Mutallimov, to make it 1-1. That score held for the rest of the match, part of Group D2 of the UEFA Nations League.
The penalty came from a handball by Renat Dadashov that Emil Safarov compounded with a foul inside the box on Gvidas Gineitis. The referee did not hesitate, and Kucys converted the spot kick in style. But Azerbaijan responded quickly: just three minutes later, Emreli finished from the center of the box off a pass from Mutallimov to level the score in what soon became a tight, hard-fought contest.
The rest of the first half produced chances for both sides without either finding a breakthrough. Tellur Mutallimov tried his luck from outside the box but missed the target, Renat Dadashov forced a low save with a shot from outside the area, and Gvidas Gineitis had his own chances too, also without luck. Rahil Mammadov and Tellur Mutallimov were both booked for dangerous play before halftime, which arrived with the score locked at 1-1.
A Scoreless Second Half
The second half followed a similar script. Azerbaijan threatened through Renat Dadashov, who again tested his luck from the center of the box with an assist from Rufat Abdullazada, while Lithuania pushed forward with Gvidas Gineitis, who came close to scoring more than once but could not beat the opposing goalkeeper. Both sides made several substitutions in search of fresh legs, but neither Musa Qurbanli nor Aleksey Isayev for Azerbaijan, nor Motiejus Burba for Lithuania, could break the deadlock. The match ended in a 1-1 draw without further incident, aside from yellow cards shown to Gvidas Gineitis and Aleksey Isayev.
The final numbers came out just as even, a fair reflection of what played out on the field:
| Statistic | Lithuania | Azerbaijan |
|---|---|---|
| Possession (%) | 50.7 | 49.3 |
| Shots | 9 | 9 |
| Shots on target | 3 | 4 |
| Passes | 432 | 418 |
| Fouls committed | 15 | 16 |
The in-house xG estimate for the match was similarly balanced: 1.129 for Lithuania against 0.71 for Azerbaijan, a number suggesting the home side carried slightly more threat in its attacks, though not by an overwhelming margin.
What This Point Means for Each Side
With this draw, Lithuania remains in first place in Group D2 with 4 points from two matches played, the product of a win and a draw, with no losses so far. Azerbaijan, for its part, picked up its first point from a single match played, sitting 3 points behind the leader. Liechtenstein rounds out the group without a point yet, though it was not involved in this round of matches.
The result leaves both national teams with similarly mixed takeaways: Lithuania stays on top of the table thanks to a solid start, while Azerbaijan can take some encouragement from a competitive showing against the group leader. The draw, built in just thirteen minutes of play and held for more than three quarters of an hour without changes, leaves the impression of an even match that neither side managed to tilt in its favor.
