Peetson's early strike puts Estonia ahead, holds on to beat Luxembourg 1-0
A Peetson goal in the fourth minute was enough for Estonia to get past Luxembourg and move closer to the top of Nations League Group C4.

Barely four minutes had gone by when Rasmus Peetson already had the entire A. Le Coq Arena on its feet. A right-footed strike from the center of the box, a VAR check to confirm it, and Estonia 1, Luxembourg 0. That's how it all ended too: with that early goal holding up for the full 90 minutes plus three minutes of stoppage time.
The goal came after an initial warning from Mattias Kait, who had tried his luck with a right-footed effort from inside the box off a Patrik Kristal assist, only to be denied by a save. That rebound sparked the sequence that Peetson finished off seconds later to put Estonia ahead. There were no more goals after that, though there was still plenty of match left to play.
An open game, with Estonia closer to second place
With the lead in hand, Estonia didn't sit back. Quite the opposite: the hosts created the clearest chances of the match. Maksim Paskotsi tested the keeper early from inside the box, Markus Poom kept firing from distance on several occasions, and Kevor Palumets forced a strong save from the opposing goalkeeper with a shot toward the top corner. Luxembourg, for its part, grew into the game going forward with Vincent Thill as the main source of danger, setting up chances for Aiman Dardari and Omar Natami that failed to find the target.
In the second half, Estonia had two clear chances to extend the lead with headers from Peetson, both off crosses from Poom, but neither found the back of the net. Luxembourg responded through Timothe Rupil and, deep into stoppage time, with an attempt from Sebastien Thill from outside the box that also failed to change the outcome. The match also produced a string of yellow cards for both sides (Enes Mahmutovic, Omar Natami, Marten Kuusk, Vahid Selimovic, Karol Mets, Eldin Dzogovic, Mathias Olesen, Markus Poom and Leandro Barreiro), though none had any real impact on the scoreline or the flow of play.
The numbers behind the match
Luxembourg controlled more of the ball, but Estonia was far more effective in testing the opposing goal, as the gap in shots on target shows.
| Stat | Estonia | Luxembourg |
|---|---|---|
| Possession (%) | 45.6 | 54.4 |
| Shots | 14 | 8 |
| Shots on target | 9 | 2 |
| Corners | 7 | 3 |
| Passes | 446 | 529 |
| Fouls committed | 13 | 12 |
That edge in shots on target also shows up in the post-match expected goals (xG) figures: 1.71 for Estonia compared to 0.429 for Luxembourg, a number that confirms the hosts were clearly sharper in the final third, even if the scoreline ended up as tight as it did.
The result also stood in contrast to our pre-match projections: our model gave Estonia just a 30% chance of winning, against a 44% chance of a draw and a 26% chance of a Luxembourg win, with expected goals of 0.64 for the hosts and 0.58 for the visitors. The reality was more lopsided than forecast, with Estonia dominating the bulk of the clear-cut chances in the match.
What it means for the group standings
The win lifts Estonia into second place in Group C4 of the UEFA Nations League, with 5 points from 3 matches played (1 win, 2 draws, 0 losses), just 2 points behind leaders Iceland, who sit on 7. Luxembourg, meanwhile, remains in third place with 3 points from the same number of matches (1 win, 0 draws, 2 losses) and a negative goal difference that is starting to weigh on them.
For Estonia, the result confirms the strong form the team is showing in the group; for Luxembourg, the defeat makes things a bit more complicated in a table where, from here on out, every point starts to count double.
